James Gunn Celebrates Lobo Anniversary as Jason Momoa May Be Exactly What ‘Supergirl’ Needs

James Gunn is hyping up Lobo again, and he did it by going back to where the Main Man first made his mark in DC Comics.

“Happy anniversary to the main man himself! Lobo didn’t just enter the comic scene – he exploded into it with his first appearance in THE OMEGA MEN #3. Written by Roger Slifer, with pencils by Keith Giffen and inks by Mike DeCarlo. See Jason Momoa become LOBO in @supergirl June 26,” Gunn posted.

James Gunn knows Lobo is a selling point

Gunn’s post is more than a simple anniversary shout-out. It feels like another reminder to fans that Jason Momoa is bringing one of DC’s most popular antiheroes to the big screen in Supergirl.

Momoa as Lobo has been one of the easier DCU casting wins to get fans behind.

Gunn has already said Lobo was added to the movie as part of the adaptation process, and Momoa has long made it known the character is one of his favorites.

Jason Momoa could give Supergirl a boost

Our insiders have said DC liked Momoa as Lobo so much that more material was worked into the movie for him.

Supergirl has looked like a risky project for a while. Industry chatter has painted it as an expensive gamble, and the recent track record for female-led superhero movies has not exactly inspired confidence. The Marvels and Madame Web both crashed, which makes the pressure even higher on Milly Alcock’s film.

Lobo changes the equation a bit.

Momoa brings built-in fan interest, star power, and a rougher edge that could help widen the movie’s appeal beyond the usual crowd.

Supergirl may still be Kara’s movie, but Lobo has the kind of wild-card energy that can get skeptical comic book fans to pay attention.

Lobo may be the extra punch the movie needs

Gunn’s post also comes off like smart marketing. Supergirl needs hooks, and Momoa’s Lobo is one of the clearest ones DC has right now.

A cosmic road movie centered on Kara could work on its own, but tossing in Lobo gives the film more attitude, more action potential, and more mainstream appeal. F

anboys who may not be fully sold on a Supergirl movie could show up for Momoa smashing his way through the DCU as the Main Man.

Call it extra testosterone or call it common sense. Either way, Lobo looks like one of the best weapons this movie has.
