Tilda Swinton has been cast as the Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie.
In the comics, the Ancient One is a male Tibetan monk, so when news of the casting became known, some fans complained.
It turns out, however, that Tilda Swinton might actually be playing the Ancient One as a male.
In an interview with the Guardian, it’s noted Swinton is unsure if she will play the part of the Ancient One as a man or a woman.
Swinton has actually previously played male roles, so at least for her, this wouldn’t be something out of the ordinary.
It’s possible Marvel could be going for more of an androgynous version of the Ancient One, sort of like how Swinton played the archangel Gabriel in Constantine.
Doctor Strange hits November 4, 2016 directed by Scott Derrickson starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange.
