Following the exit of Henry Cavill from the role of Geralt of Rivia, it looks as if The Witcher franchise at Netflix will be done for.
Netflix already announced Season 5 will be the last, which features Liam Hemsworth replacing Cavill as the main character.
Now it’s learned that two planned spinoffs have been canceled.
The Rats, and kids spinoff canceled
According to What’s On Netflix, two The Witcher spinoffs won’t be moving forward which includes The Rats and an untitled series for kids.
The Rats were introduced in the final episode of Season 3 who are a young gang of criminals. The cast was already set and it’s even said they started filming, but it’s claimed that when Netflix saw the footage, Netflix didn’t like it and gave it the ax. It’s further claimed that Netflix will possibly use some of the footage as flashbacks for Season 4 (via Redanian Intelligence).
Regarding The Witcher series kids, it was first announced in 2021, but the series is also now said to be dead. Nothing is known about the project.
So as noted, while there were big plans by Netflix to create a large universe for The Witcher, it seems as if that’s not happening and things are ending with Season 5 which should air in 2025 or 2026.
The Witcher Season 4 and 5 are currently in production as the final two seasons are filming back to back. Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan are also returning.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is also still set to be released later this year which features Doug Cockle as the voice of Geralt from the video games. The description offers: Hired to probe seaside village attacks, mutant monster hunter Geralt unravels an age-old conflict between humans and sea people that threatens war between kingdoms. Aided by allies, he must solve the mystery before hostilities escalate. Watch the trailer below.
Regarding Henry Cavill, he’ll still be swinging swords as he is developing his live-action Warhammer live-action series and universe at Amazon Prime Video, and Cavill will also be starring in the reboot of Highlander.
