X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014) Review

The Ultimate Mulligan

A Film Review of X-Men: Days of Future Past

By Lawrence Napoli

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15534:]]

There’s no questioning the ambitious nature of a film production of this magnitude.  Not only is director Bryan Singer attempting to unite two separate, yet equally popular casts of successful X-Men films, but he is also attempting to correct the course for one of 20th Century Fox’s most valuable licenses where installments he wasn’t responsible for may have, shall we say, veered astray.  Oh yeah, he’s also trying to make an excellent summer blockbuster while laying the foundation for an ever expanding X-Men, cinematic universe (Channing Tatum as Gambit in a standalone is real) and all of this is somehow supposed to be accomplished in 2 hours and 11 minutes.  A solid attempt was made to corral all of the above, with several more A-list characters added to the fray, while nodding to one of the most influential X-Men storylines ever conceived, but Bryan Singer is no Franklin Richards.  He does not make fully functional universes in the palm of his hand with the speed of thought and with instantaneous relatability and comprehension by the audience.  There are plot gaps, there are awkward moments, there are unsatisfying resolutions and it’s all to be expected because there’s simply too much to account for, but they’ll be damned if they don’t try to cram it all in.

The primary reason for this is the same reason why Sony is attempting a similar strategy by pitting Spider-Man against most of his famous rogues at once by pursuing the Sinister Six storyline.  Fox wants that Avengers money and they want it now.  Apparently, the only way to do this is by chucking more characters, subplots, and spectacle at the audience as possible.  Thus the writers must deliver or be discarded and Simon Kinberg, Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn responded with a story that’s a jack of all trades, but clearly a master of none.  First, let me note that despite Hugh Jackman’s presence in addition to his character’s significance, this is the first X-Men film that is not all about Wolverine.  The story is a tale that is as much Wolverine’s, as it is Mystique’s, as it is Professor Xavier’s, as it is Magneto’s.  Unfortunately, because this script is particularly required to focus on so many primary characters, the audience isn’t privy to a more rounded presentation of any of them.  This film is able to reconcile this deficiency due to an assumed familiarity with at least X-Men’s1-3 in addition to First Class and the hope that everyone remembers the good guys from the bad in addition to what they are all about as individuals.  Every reference to the past, every reference to the future, every comedic quip and all the clever banter does not pay off for those in the audience who are not in the know.  Those that are will be treated with layers of nostalgia and an unending parade of familiar faces which is, by far, this story’s absolute strength.  There are plenty of campfire scenes throughout to hammer home the team camaraderie theme, but as good as that feeling is, it is noticeably incomplete with several significant characters left out in the cold if not entirely forgotten all together.

This is the reality of the limitations of a script and how it translates to the final minute count, but the compromises do not end with character development, they extend to the story’s format.  As this film is initially told as a flashback from an (ahem) apocalyptic future of totalitarian hate, the audience is constantly shifting settings between the future (original cast) and the 70s (newer cast).  The dichotomy between worlds is an intriguing contrast that eventually gives way entirely to the 70s because ultimately the future subplot is window dressing for the 70s despite being infinitely more visually dynamic and interesting in general.  More screen time could have yielded a better balance in the importance of the activity of both realities, but there were more pressing matters to spend time on, like exposition.  There is an immense amount of off screen plot that has been at work since X-Men: First Class and it is leaked via dialogue to explain why the future is the way it is as well as why the 70s are the way they are.  Despite these obligatory scenes the most important plot device of this film (the time travelling element) is frustratingly revealed to be not exactly what we think it is and it is to be accepted completely on faith and forgotten immediately.  When is a DeLorean, not a DeLorean

Unfortunately, the biggest loser when it comes to this film’s accommodation of so many characters and subplots is the action and visual effects, you know, the real reason people go to be wowed by summer blockbusters.  First, the number of action sequences can be counted by a fraction of the fingers on one hand.  Second, the combat in both the future and past crawls along at a snail’s pace thanks mostly to a healthy application, reapplication AND REAPPLICATION of slow motion effects.  Third, the character powers and Sentinel activity portrayed in the future when compared to those depicted in the 70s is like comparing the special effects of Avatar to those used in Spaceballs.  (I get that the 70s can’t be as stylized as the future, but mutant powers are no less amazing in any time and should be presented as such)  Fourth, the hand to hand combat demonstrated by Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique is as sensual as it is breathtaking; too bad she’s the only character who demonstrates this ability in the entire film.  (I’m looking at you “bone claws” Wolverine)

Now I invite the reader to forget everything and focus on the film within the film: Days of Future Past which I affectionately have labeled: Recruiting Quicksilver.  The small cross-section of this film that encompasses the character’s presentation, dialogue and action scenes are so uniquely satisfying that removing them from the final film would yield an end product that could only be described as average at best.  The Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver sequence is the first and last thing the audience will remember about this entire movie and its entertainment value is liquid gold in its comedic timing, glistening diamonds in its visual effect wizardry and pure platinum in its overall brilliance and added value to this cinematic adventure.  This sub-film even has its own 3 act structure that begins with pulling into the Maximoff drive way, shifts gears as soon as the headphones go on and decelerates when arguably the most powerful character the audience has seen thus far is unceremoniously dismissed to go back home to momma.  Evan Peters absolutely owns this character and he (along with the visual effects company that created his effects) deserves a standing ovation for invaluable contributions to this film that infuses significant moments of fun and joy throughout an otherwise foreboding film.

As for everyone else, I’ll see if I can touch base on the entire cast.  James McAvoy delivers the best performance all around featuring sincere frustration, depression and redemption as a young Professor X.  Hugh Jackman delivers the most tame and tempered manifestation of Wolverine to date.  Michael Fassbender’s Magneto turns into a cookie-cutter, somewhat disinterested, pseudo-antagonist.  Jennifer Lawrence makes Mystique more and more interesting, seductive and much more sympathetic than Rebecca Romijn ever did.  Halle Berry’s Storm couldn’t be more irrelevant thanks to a severe lack of lines.  Nicholas Hoult is the quintessential, Big Bang Theory kind of Beast.  Anna Paquin is barely referenced as Rogue.  Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde has an unexplained evolutionary jump in powers and still looks like a little girl amongst the rest of the cast.  Peter Dinklage commands respect on the screen as Bolivar Trask, but cannot stop playing (and winning) staring contests throughout the film.  Shawn Ashmore’s Iceman has a beard.  Omar Sy’s Bishop looks more impressive than his ability to impact a battle.  Josh Helman’s young Stryker does a decent job channeling Brian Cox with limited screen time.  Daniel Cudmore’s Colossus somehow has fewer lines than he had in X2Bingbing Fan’s Blink had an excellent visual effects team in charge of her.  Adan Canto’s Sunspot speaks softly (or not at all) and carries an enflamed stick.  Booboo Stewart’s Warpath uses knives.  Patrick Stewart’s Professor X is heartfelt and grandfatherly.  Ian McKellen’s Magneto is extremely old.  Lucas Till’s Havok says hi to prove his character is still alive in this universe.  Evan Jonigkeit’s Toad has got some mean goggles.

X-Men plus $200 million dollars of production budget is going to draw a crowd and make money and that’s completely independent of the concept of quality.  The proof is X-Men Origins: Wolverine and that movie was, sorry to say, a steaming turd by all accounts yet it made $373 million globally.  I have plenty of reservations for this film due to 1) having followed every previous X-Men film, 2) being a rabid fan of the 90s cartoon series and 3) casually following the current stories from the comic books.  There are more than enough plot gaps and inconsistencies to downgrade its status from “great” because a film so reliant on connections to its predecessors should not be so flippant with “maintaining” its own continuity.  What makes X-Men: Days of Future Past a “good enough” blockbuster is the huge nostalgia factor of character interaction throughout in addition to anything involving Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver.  However, this film cannot bear the weight of its own plot because there’s simply too much going on in and between every scene.  In fact, just about every subplot could sustain its own, respective, feature length film.  Alas, the order of the day is to gloss over as many details as possible in order to bombard the audience with character, after plot twist, after character (and so on…) until the final credits roll.  At the end of the … Days of Future Past, this film serves Bryan Singer as the ultimate nullifier for abominable X-Men installments of the past so as to reassume control of a franchise he foolishly spurned for Superman.  We can all have hope for the future, but I certainly have nothing good to say regarding the post credit teaser in this film, which by the way, IS the lead-in to the sequel come 2016.

COVER SHOOT: The Top 5 Comic Book Covers for November 13th, 2013

COVER SHOOT

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This weekly feature will take a look at THE most visually compelling comic book covers on the market today. Whether they be rare variant editions or just your standard fare, these are the top 5 covers that stand out amidst the bevy of books released each week. They say, “A picture is worth a thousand words”  but these covers are worth more than that! No matter the storylines behind them, these covers compel you to at least check them out, which can be worth exponentially more than just words to the companies that publish them! Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12324:]]

1. Coffin Hill #2 (Vertigo/DC): This stunning cover by Dave Johnson is not only beautiful but hauntingly eerie as well. The deep purple and maroon background are the perfect complement to the bright foreground figure. It makes it seem that she was cut form another work of art and overlaid to this one, each piece having merit in their own right, but together make something extraordinarily wonderful!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12323:]]

2. X-Men Gold #1 (Variant Edition) (Marvel): John Cassady makes a classic throwback cover to the early days of the X-Men in this 50 year anniversary book of Marvel’s merry mutants! The layout has that perfect nostalgic feel of the team diving into battle, young and innocent, with no regrets. But, it is Cassady’s decision to use pop art style design for the background that gives this cover that Jim Steranko feel, and no one can beat that!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12322:]]

3. Harbinger #18 (Valiant): Matthew Walsh creates an amazingly surreal cover that is compositionally perfect. The way Walsh “bleeds” the tendrils from the Bleeding Monk into the caverns of Peter Stancheck’s mind not only makes for an outstanding effect, but also metaphorically matches the relationship these two characters have with one another. The choice of minimal colors draws the eye away form everything else on the racks today — perfect!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12321:]]

4. Batman: Li’l Gotham #8 (DC): I don’t even know where to begin with this one! Dustin Nguyen creates some of the most artistic and fun covers on the market today and this is just one more awesome piece! There are so many parts for the eye to enjoy, the vibrant colors, the amazingly rendered characters, mermaids, the pirate ship etc. I could go on and on! This piece is not only poster worthy, but gallery worthy. Whomever says “toon” art isn’t art, is too stuck up to know what true art is!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:12320:]]

5. Batgirl #25 (DC): As frequent readers of this article know, Alex Garner has been present on this list more than a few times. Is there any reason why he shouldn’t be? This painted and digitally enhanced cover is essentially perfect. The strain and determination on the central characters face sets the pace for what takes place in the interior of the book and helps to bring a glimpse of humanity to an otherwise dark and gloomy city! Alex we NEED posters!!

COVER SHOOT: The Top Five Comic Covers For 8/28/13

Enjoy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10545:]]

1. American Vampire Anthology #1 – Variant Edition – (Vertigo/DC): This homage to the Godfather is a striking image that is sleek and beautiful in it’s simplicity. Rafael Albuquerque uses an ink wash to create this ode to the past but still manages to convey a high level of detail with such a fickle medium. His level of skill is unmatched and this cover proves it!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10546:]]

2. The Green Hornet #5 – Variant Edition – (Dynamite): Paolo Rivera gives us a “behind the scenes look” with this sketch cover which will surely draw your eye at the local comic shop! I always appreciate these kinds of covers, ones where we get to see the bare bones of the art in it’s pure, unaltered form. There is something awe-inspiring about seeing the artist concept formulated in high pencil detail prior to color and ink that makes you want to pick up a pencil yourself and give it a whirl!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10547:]]

3. Batman/Superman #3 – Variant Edition – (DC): Yes, Jae Lee appears on this list again, but give me one good reason why he shouldn’t! With the stark contrast in color between the background and the central characters — everything pops on this cover! There is so much detail and such a visually appealing layout, that the eye doesn’t know what to take in first. Plus, his rendition of Darkseid is PERFECT!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10548:]]

4. The Wake – Director’s Cut #1 (Vertigo/DC): Sean Cassidy did an amazing cover when this book was originally released, but this one far surpasses that! The bleached white background offsets the minimal color palette used and helps to accentuate the bold lines of the central image. It is truly enthralling and definitely creepy!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10549:]]

5. Uncanny Avengers #11 (Marvel): John Cassady creates a cover reminiscent of one of my favorite X-Men covers, Uncanny X-Men #249. Although his layout is completely different, his lack of color and placement of Wolverine as the central sacrifice, brings about the same feeling of dread that I felt all those years ago. The cover is rich in it’s simplicity but even more so it the feeling it conveys to the reader. Very nice work!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for 6/5/2013

The Top of the Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This is the weekly “quick pick” of the best 5 comics to hit the shelves! Whether they are riddled with action, have the best dramatic sequences, blast you with a bevy of shock and awe or make you feel like a child again, these are the books EVERYONE should be reading! This “DOC’s” prescription for having the best week possible — begins with these Top 5 books! (In no particular order!)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8476:]]

1.  Astro City #1 (Vertigo/DC):  Kurt Busiek makes a triumphant return to the world of Astro City and comic fans rejoice! One of the nineties most acclaimed and inspirational looks at the super hero genre returns this week under the Vertigo banner! The media has been praising this book for the past few months and it shows, local stores were sold out in minutes and second printings are sure to be in the future for those arriving after the initial “running of the bulls” when they opened! One of my personal favorites from yesteryear, Astro City is a sure fire hit!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8477:]]

2.  Ten Grand #2 (Joe’s Comics/Image):  JMS and Ben Templesmith forge a unique and disturbing tale of a lost love and how far you would go for just five more minutes of contact with them. The tale of Joe Fitzgerald is both stunning and gut wrenching as we watch a man perish over and over again in order to make up for past sins and that five minute window of bliss with his departed Laura. This book is something special and another instant sell-out!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8478:]]

3.  All-New X-Men #12 (Marvel):  Bendis has his original X-Men come face to face with Rick Remender’s Uncanny Avengers in a book that is both nostalgic and heart warming. The meeting of “young” Cyclops and his “older” brother Havok will bring an instant smile on your face and make you wish for simpler times in the Marvel U.! Bendis may not know a thing about how to write Cosmic, but he does a hell of a job depicting the “Merry Mutants!”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8479:]]

4.  Kick -Ass 3 #1 (Icon/Marvel):  This is it, folks! The final chapter in the life of Dave Lizewski as Kick-Ass and it is as hilarious as when we first read about him in 2008. Hit-Girl is imprisoned, the heroes are losing interest in protecting the streets and High School is over. What does a young hero with no powers do now? Take cool “Batman-esque” photos at his parents grave is what! And maybe kick a little ass as well! Plus, there are six interlocking variant covers that merge to make one awesome poster!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:8480:]]

5.  Avengers Arena #10 (Marvel):  Dennis Hopeless crafts a stunning and emotional tale yet again, and this time, you WILL hate Dennis Hopeless for the ending! From the initial page you know in your bones what is going to happen and even though you pray that it won’t, you are still shocked by the outcome. This has been a fantastic book from the start and has more depth than anyone would have ever thought. I implore you to give this book a try, you will be hooked!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for 3/20/2013

The Top of the Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

This is a “quick pick” look at the Top 5 comics that EVERYONE should be reading this week! Whether it’s rife with characterization, filled with emotional strife, has a bevy of high octane battle sequences or is just a plain ol’ great read — these books belong at the “Top Of The Pile!” (In no particular order!)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6199:]]

1. Harbinger #10(Valiant): The Harbinger Wars storyline begins within the pages of this very book! Our heroes are beaten and overwhelmed but all you need is Faith to get you through the toughest of times. This series is one of the most compelling, action packed and emotional stories on the shelves today so, why isn’t it on your pull list? Well, if you don’t know — what are you waiting for!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6203:]]

2. G.I. Joe: Special Missions #1(IDW): This used to be one of my favorite series back when I was a little DOC and now, thanks to IDW and -the legend himself- Chuck Dixon, it can be a favorite again! Centering on select groups of the “All American Heroes”, this series gets fans reconnected to the Joes and can focus on their individual talents. So, grab some gumbo and a Yo Joe Cola and get ready for some nostalgia!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6204:]]

3. Superior Spider-Man #6(Marvel): The most controversial series on the stands today, Dan Slott continues to push the envelope with his hero/villain tale. This issue introduces two jokester villains, Jester and Screwball, that get a kick out of mocking heroes. Too bad good ol’ Doc Ock/Spidey isn’t a fan of a joke at his expense! Plus, this issue sees the return of fan favorite Humberto Ramos on artistic chores!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6205:]]

4. Constantine #1(DC): Okay, this isn’t the Hellblazer book from Vertigo that we all knew and loved, but it is the New 52 version of everyone’s favorite con man — John Constantine! What makes this series even better is the fact that it is being written by fan favorite scribe Jeff Lemire! Known for dark and completely engrossing tales, Lemire(Green Arrow, Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Justice League Dark) is sure to get those heart rates pounding with a tale of black magic, demons and more than a little sleight of hand! Plus, no Keanu Reeves, folks!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6206:]]

5. All New X-Men #9(Marvel): Bendis may be missing the mark with his jaunt into the cosmic realm but this series revolving around the original X-Men traveling to the future to set things right, is pitch perfect! The juxtaposition between the past and the future, young and old, hero and villain is done with astounding ease and reminds us what great comics are supposed to look like. Mystique and Sabertooth try to sway the naive young Scott Summers to take down his future (current) self in an issue that reminds me of the good ol’ Chris Claremont days!

Top 10 Worst Movie Girlfriends

(some of) The Worst Girlfriends/Wives in Movies

By: Lawrence Napoli

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5662:]]

FU Valentine’s Day!  It clearly exists as a sadistic conspiracy to swindle hard earned cash that could be used for rent, food or whatever the hell else you need to survive.  Blowing money left and right for someone you think will always be there for you, be honest with you and take care of you is completely delusional.  Turn on the news to see how charitable people can be.  If it’s one thing people have proven, it’s that they cannot be counted on.  Betrayal is in our blood, so we’re all better off relying on ourselves.  This is a pathetic list of truly exceptional succubi in movies which is proof positive that some women can leave you a bitter, broken, little man for any reason, but probably because of the fun of it.  Valentine’s Day is the ultimate slap in the face to decent people minding their own business because it brings all these lovey-dovey types out of the woodwork; exposing the rest of us to their gut wrenching affection which is clearly an elaborate front for getting laid.  These are some of the worst girlfriends and wives in movies and the reasons why February 14th is more like Friday the 13th, so hopefully that soul-sucking monster doesn’t hack off your genitalia and chuck it, Lorena Bobbit-style.

(Editor’s Note: Head on over here for Lawrence’s Top 10 Best Movie Girfriends list)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5652:]]

10) Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Kat’s got to be the least scathing of the worst for the simple fact she actually gets together with Patrick by the end of this film [Please note: she’s the only one on this list to do so].  But look what she does in the mean time.  Besides being a mightier than thou feminist and incredibly short tempered she is completely incapable of detecting any semblance of good will being thrown her direction.  She hates her sister for being more attractive than her, she hates all men for 1 taking advantage of her and there’s simply no pleasing someone who is at the center of her own universe at all times.  There’s no way Patrick stays with this girl if the story were to continue years from now because she proves that the power of self love is unequaled.  Who needs love from someone else?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5653:]]

9) Jo in Rounders (1998)

What is worse than a girlfriend that lures you into a fall sense of safety?  Jo hooks up with Mike Mc. D in law school, but the problem is Mike’s a wicked good card player and he lost 30 grand to a Russian mobster.  Jo demands him to never go back to cards, but staying away from Poker is difficult for someone with a gift to play it and instead of helping him through it, she is always distrustful of where he’s been, what he’s been doing and of course, the constant nagging makes it that much worse.  She rifles through his clothing while he bathes like she’s looking for other women’s panties stuffed in his pockets.  She has the unmitigated gall for berating Mike for using his Poker acumen to get in good with his law professors and that the only way to make it is by truly earning it.  “Earning it?”  This is law school Jo!  This is what shysters do!  And what does Mike get for all his trouble staying out of the card game?  He gets no note, no bedding and an empty apartment with no explanation.  Thanks for the memories Jo.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5654:]]

8) Carmen in Starship Troopers (1997)

You know you’re in trouble if you’ve already told a girl that you love her and you need to ask her to say it back to you.  Carmen is a beautiful, personable and intelligent creature who is as dense as it comes to the state of the universe.  She views joining up with the Global Federation like one of Stewie Griffin’s sexy parties where she can fly a giant spaceship.  She’s so full of herself that she makes course corrections to her superior’s course navigations while still being a snot-nosed rookie.  This is the kind of woman who knows full well what hot sh*t she is and really could care less about anything or anyone else that isn’t inside her tunnel vision.  Plus, you’ve got to love her exit strategy with Johnny Rico: a vid message from light years away saying: [and I paraphrase] I’m going career military.  That doesn’t leave too much time for us.  Don’t forget to write.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5655:]]

7) Summer in 500 Days of Summer (2009)

Tom is a hopeless romantic pining for nothing more than something beautiful in a relationship.  He meets Summer, a beautiful woman who defies every convention and is a breath of fresh air when it comes to chicks that are cool, or so Tom thought.  Her care free attitude about life seems like some sort of higher plane thought processes, but is really an elaborate front for a girl who really doesn’t have a clue.  She’s moody, unpredictable and a complete and total hypocrite.  After spending genuine days of pure magic with Tom over the course of their dating lives, she drops bombs like “I’m not the marrying type,” when that was exactly what he wanted with her, only to turn around shortly after their break up to marry some other guy.  What the hell?  She’s like: OMG, I’m totally full of it.  Sorry about that.  At least she apologizes (kind of), but still represents the ultimate tease for someone who came off as the answer to one man’s prayers only to be the source of his nightmares and negative energy.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5656:]]

6) Roxie Hart in Chicago (2002)

So Roxie’s a down-on-her-luck kind of gal who isn’t particularly thrilled with being married to Mr. Cellophane so she starts messing around with some other swinging dick.  Strike 1.  She shoots the dude she’s having an affair with, goes to prison and follows a ludicrous defense strategy to use her pathetic husband’s sympathy on the stand to get her off the hook in court.  Strike 2.  Then she decides to go into show business with her co-femme fatale making a mockery of women using sex and guns to get their way by all means necessary.  Strike 3, she’s out!  Roxie is no feminist; she’s a reverse misogynist with tits.  Her husband Amos is the only decent human being in the whole film and she treats him like garbage.  Did I mention she lies about being pregnant with his child to score extra pity points with the jury during the trial?  Yeah, that happened too.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5657:]]

5) Jean Grey/Phoenix in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

I don’t need to remind anyone here about Jean playing both sides of the field between Logan and Scott, but suffice it to say for being an exceptionally talented telekinetic, she is surprisingly weak willed when it comes to men.  Jean Grey had sacrificed herself to save all her fellow mutants in X2, which is something really good.  Unfortunately, she survives to become an infinitely powerful super being called The Phoenix who is a complete slave to her emotions and she really likes the negative feelings.  Thus, the first thing she does after emerging from the murky depths is to vaporize the man that would be her husband.  The only thing that remained was his sunglasses.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5658:]]

4) Fox in Wanted (2008)

Ever get the feeling you were being played in a relationship from the very beginning?  Wesley, despite being trained into a super powered assassin, is actually being played by everyone for basically the entire film.  Fox, however, is the worst offender and although they never actually formalize their relationship, these two are attached at the hip and the mouth for a decent length of the film.  An intense training/getting to know you process occurs between the two, but none of that penetrated Fox as her mission to use Wesley as bait (expendable bait) never truly shakes.  She’s not particularly big on sharing her feelings or with being honest, but she does manage to avoid killing Wesley by killing herself.  A better suggestion would be to just shoot the bad guy.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5659:]]

3) Andy in The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

If your relationship is failing, you must be doing really well at work.  That is some severely messed up logic, but apparently totally fine for the business-minded female professional of today.  Her relationship with Nate is never something that has a chance when an opportunity to suckle at the power teet that belongs to Miranda Priestly comes calling.  Nate’s constantly getting blown off, neglected and forgotten.  What’s worse is that Andy pulls this same junk on all of her former friends before she assumed the position of Beelzebub.  Andy eventually breaks it off with Nate all together because she’s a fabulous fashion industry professional who has flings with random men during fashion shows.  I don’t have a problem with professional women, but they should never have delusions of grandeur that they can have her cake and eat it too.  If something is important, you make the time.  Andy had zero time for Nate.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5660:]]

2) Marion in Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Cocaine is a hell of a drug!  Ok, so it was heroin in this particular film, but let’s carefully examine the character of Marion: pretty little thing with no real responsibility, whose apartment is being paid for by her parents and has an ambitious little drug dealing boyfriend by the name of Harry showering her with gifts, fun, attention and plenty of snow.  It’s difficult for me to have any sympathy for Harry because he is a severe horse’s ass, but I guess it takes one to love one, or so it seems.  Marion really falls for the high of heroin and she proceeds to go to extreme lengths to get more.  She carries on with the psychologist she used to have an affair with for money and she volunteers for gang bang duty for pure product.  What seals Marion as a terrible girlfriend is her violent reaction to Harry not scoring more H from a mass supply deal gone bad where the buyers rushed the sellers in desperation and they responded by showering the crowd with bullets.  Harry’s lucky to have escaped with his life and she’s pissed he didn’t get drugs.

1) Asami in Audition (1999)

Shigeharu’s wife dies and he is stricken with depression and loneliness, but with the help of his friend in the film business, he comes up with a way to get back into the dating scene.  Granted, holding an audition for a fake part that’s really interviewing women with potential for Shigeharu to date is dirty, but even he doesn’t deserve what he gets; namely, a closet psychopath who puts on a great performance to tell men exactly what they want to hear only to bring her wrath down upon them all.  Asami makes Shigeharu fall in love with her so naturally she responds with assaulting him at his home, torturing him with acupuncture needles, cutting off his left foot and plots to murder his son.  Asami represents the danger of intense obsession, the likes of which make Fatal Attraction seem like Sesame Street in comparison.

Advanced Review: All-New X-Men #2

The world has been torn asunder after the Phoenix Force merged with Scott Summers. Cities are destroyed, mutant hate is at its peak and the man whose dream brought all the X-Men together — lies dead at the hands of his first student. Things couldn’t be worse for the mutant race, especially since there are new mutants manifesting powers every day and a revolution has begun! All looks bleak, but for one specific X-Man, it is even worse. Dr. Henry McCoy is dying from another genetic mutation, but before he dies he will try to correct the present by visiting the past!

Brian Michael Bendis has crafted a thoroughly engaging tale, rife with nostalgia, that any X fan will not only appreciate — but hold most dear. It is a tale of desperation and longing for a time when things didn’t seem so complex. A tale of time travel and fantasy that feels so natural and well executed that the mere thought of time/space conundrums — is not given a second thought at all! It is so far fetched that it completely makes sense, not becoming an overall burden to the reader or the story.

It is quirky and fun and devastatingly real, bringing a microscope down on all the things that have gone awry over the years and the loss of faith in Xavier’s dream. This tale is as fresh and exciting as the fundamentals the original five X-Men had the first time they suited up. A juxtaposition of a far too dark present and a vibrant, albeit slightly naive, past. The characterization of the “little X-Men” is pitch perfect! Bendis has found their true essence and has treated it reverently, giving no qualms in his ability to scribe the “Merry Mutants” in this fans eyes!

All X fans will be clamoring for this new series, it is the shot of adrenaline the X books have been so desperately in need of! Bendis fan or not, this book will sway you towards being an X fan all over again!

Review: All-New X-Men #1

A stepping stone between the past and the future of the X-Men has been cast by Brain Michael Bendis in this weeks batch of books to hit your local shop. But it is not the tried and true, “I am here to warn you about the future”story, it is beyond that. This one has heart, originality and a tone that will have you remembering just why you became a fan of the X-Men all those years ago!

Even though we all know this will become a “time travel” tale that will have the old and current X-Men meet, it is also the first issue to see a completely divided host of X-Men and their fundamentals. Yes, Schism divided them, but not like this! Never before has there been a complete break between Cyclops’ band and the rest of the “family.” There were always those who had trouble deciding just which path to follow, but no more, Bendis has set a hard line in the sand and there is no turning back!

Focusing on the arrival of new mutants to the Marvel U., Bendis has taken the X-Men back to the days of excitement and suspense that, unfortunately, has been missing in the last few years. He has taken a character that has been labeled as a murderer and evolved him into a revolutionary for the future of the mutant race. He has created something that will compel you to read X-Men books for the sake of reading X-Men stories — not X-Avengers ones! It is suspenseful and full of heart, glancing at the early days of the X-Men while giving the current timeline an exhilarating scope and refocus!

As compelling as the tale may be, it is Stuart Immonen’s art that makes this book transcend to a different level. The thin, crisp lines bring a heightened sense of detail to everything! Foreground, background — every miniscule detail has been painstakingly rendered with a degree of professionalism that is truly rare. Immonen is the perfect choice to mimic the rousing new tale from Bendis! Don’t believe me? Just check out this amazing sketch page of Beast!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:4018:]]

Some may say that Bendis isn’t right for the X-Men, that he is “the Avengers” guy. Hopefully this outstanding first issue will draw fans to a new conclusion, one where we can be fans of X books again without having to worry about learning an entire Avengers roster to do so!

It is an exciting time to be an X fan again, let’s hope it can stay that way!

The Best of The Best: DOC’s Top Five Comic Books For November 14th!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3957:]]

“The Best of The Best”

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

If you thought October 10th was a HUGE release date with Batman #13 and the debut of Uncanny Avengers #1, just wait until next Wednesday when we see the pinnacle of comic book hype explode! EVERY company in the industry is offering up some of their best books for you to add to your pull list, but with so many choices, what are the books you just can’t live without? This list is here to help you narrow down just which ones are worthy of the title “The Best of The Best!”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3950:]]

(Click for preview)

1.  Batman #14(DC) Scott Snyder’s unnerving tale of the return of the “Clown Prince” to the streets of Gotham continues here! Harley tries to turn Bats into her own version of the Joker and the “family” is in disarray with the disappearance of Alfred. This series continues to be some of the best modern day Bat tales ever created and this one — is sure to keep you up at night! With a bunch of “Bat” books coming out on Wednesday, this one is the MUST have!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3951:]]

(Click for preview)

2.  All New X-Men #1(Marvel):  The most controversial of the group, Bends’ take on the X-Men is sure to be a sure hit or miss with fans across the board! But let’s face facts folks, he is still a great writer that can bring about some amazing stories! Truthfully, bringing some fresh ideas to the “Merry Mutants” is desperately needed! Plus, we get to see the original X-Men return in this tale without the bickering and animosity that has been strune throughout the X books in the past two years. As they travel to the present, will these bright eyed versions of their former selves be enough to change the outlook of the modern X-Men? I will be first to find out!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3953:]]

3.  The Walking Dead #104(Image):  The biggest independent comic book franchise of all time continues to churn out some of the best comics on the shelves month after month! Rick’s secret agenda has put him at odds with the others of the community, but none more so than the person he loves most, his son — Carl. Will his plan lead to Carl trying to step up and be more of a leader? And if it does, can a little boy with a big gun handle the wickedness of Neegan all on his own? By far, this book is Image’s front runner for best book!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3954:]]

(Click for preview)

4.  Archer & Armstrong #4 (Valiant):  This dynamically different duo have to stop the Secret Sect from forming all of the pieces of the Boon before they destroy the world. But it is no easy path! On the way they must overcome ninja nuns, Nazi priests, former friends and, evidently, themselves in order to survive! Fred Van Lente has made this THE best “buddy” book on the shelves today, full of characterization, brutal action sequences and overall — fun! This is the best book you are not reading!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3955:]]

5.  The Boys #72(Dynamite):  Garth Ennis has finished The Boys with issue #72. And when I say “finished” I don’t mean just wrapping up his insane book about those who keep superheroes in check, I mean the Boys themselves as well! #72 stars the only remaining team member, Wee Hughie, and we see just what he will do after both his personal world and professional one — are completely destroyed! I will sorely miss this crazy ride of a book, but there is still hope for the movie from Paramount to hold on to! This was the best anti-superhero book you will ever read, so get the trades and hold on for dear life!

So, that’s the best the myriad of companies have to offer — at least in my humble opinion! What books are you eager to see this week? Let us know in the comment section below and start saving your pennies — it’s going to be one massive week for comics fans!

Advanced Review: Avengers vs. X-Men #12

The amazing variant cover says it all — “The End,” but is it as epic as Marvel is making it out to be?

In some ways, yes; Marvel has recaptured the overall units sold in the months since Avengers Vs. X-Men has come out — no small feat since DC is right behind, chomping at the bit, waiting for Marvel to slip. And there are some truly great moments that occur in this book: We finally see the return of Nova, albeit for a mere moment and as someone we wish he wasn’t, but he is there. We also see some touching instances, too few and one in particular that I wish was especially more prominent, but they are there as well. The action is intense and the art was well crafted – an overall well done book – but was this the “epic” conclusion to the biggest event Marvel has tried to produce in decades?

Sadly, no.

This could have been a truly emotional tale of a man who was lost in order to save an entire race. A great character that has become a pivotal part of the entire Marvel U. in the last year. For a glimpse it was, but only for a glimpse. The defeat of the Dark Phoenix was quite unremarkable, but the direct moment before — could have been amazing! That’s how the whole book felt, like it was grasping for greatness and then watched as it slipped through its fingers. I am not trying to dissuade you from this book, the five dollar price tag may do that on its own, but it is a good read. I just wish there was more to it.

The “Architects” have finished their opus. Whether we are fans of it or not, it is finally through. I, for one, felt that it was done well half of the time, the other half could have been forgotten. The Marvel Universe as a whole has not been changed for better or worse! It is the same status quo we have always had. Yes, new teams will emerge from this and apparently everyone will be some form of an Avenger! Whether they are Uncanny, Astonishing or Spectacular, does it really matter anymore when they are all in the fraternal brotherhood of Steve Rogers?

All it took to wrap up this entire event was just three little words, so my review will be summed up by some as well, “What could’ve been!”

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for September 12th, 2012

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

( A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER! )

I do the research, you reap the reward! Before you head out to your favorite shop today, be sure to add these five titles to your list of goodies! Forget that “apple a day” nonsense, this “DOC’s” prescription to good health starts with these top five books of the week!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3024:]]1.  Batgirl #0:  Gail Simone has been hinting about Batgirl’s origin since issue one, especially that fateful night when it was all taken away from her. Well, you won’t see how she learned to walk again here, but you will see her heroism in full swing and her first meeting with a certain Knight! Well paced and very rich in characterization, this is a fantastic series!

2.  Avengers Vs. X-Men #11:  This is the single most impressive book of the series. Continuity issues aside — Cap asks the Hulk to join the Avengers? Wait, isn’t he already one in Avengers Assemble? Oh, that one’s only about Marvel movie characters? Okay! — this one gets the heart racing again! Plus, someone gets kill… oh, right –NO SPOILERS! I always forget!

3.  X-O Manowar #5:  One of Valiant’s coolest creations comes back in it’s flagship title! Enter–Ninjak! Finally, Aric has his hands full when Ninjak is paid to retrieve the X-O armor. But, will the world’s deadliest assassin turn it over or keep it for himself?

4.  Batman #0:  A cool tale about Bruce Wayne’s first attempts at bringing justice to Gotham, but it’s the back-up tale by James Tynion IV and Andy Clarke that makes this book worth while! Revolving around the “Bat family” of characters, we get to see their different perspectives regarding heroism in a single night. Really well done!

5.  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #2:  Purely for nostalgic reasons, this one continues James Robinson’s tale of young Adam and his quest to remember his past. It seems a certain sorcerer has made him forget the man he truly is, but that won’t stop him from trying! Not even — Trapjaw! Let the eighties reign supreme!

Advanced Review: The First X-Men #1

When I heard that the legendary Neal Adams was pitching an idea he had for an X-Men tale, I was quite excited. When I heard the idea, the excitement began to wane. As I read the book, my excitement dwindled even further.

The overall execution of the story is just not dramatic enough to capture the reader’s attention. We are thrust into a tale that portrays Wolverine as the self proclaimed “savior” of all mutants. He gathers a group to battle those who intend to harm them and — off we go! There is no drive to the story, there is nothing to make the reader feel vested in the tale whatsoever — except the fact that we will buy anything if Wolverine is attached to it! Yes, there are nods to X history within the book, and there are new characters introduced – Holo is done exceptionally well, but there just isn’t enough to warrant me to purchase the next issue.

Mr. Adams art is as skillful as ever and it was a true pleasure to gaze upon his renderings again. But unfortunately, I need more than a legendary name and a flash bang story to make me shell out four dollars. There needs to be substance, a structure, a hook — something, that can drive some excitement for the reader. Otherwise, readers will look elsewhere for those books that can make them feel something more — regardless of the talent that is attached to the project.

If you want to read about the “first” X-Men team, buy an X-Men Archives hardcover and see what Stan created. The rest is second best!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2128:]]

1.  Danger Club #3 :  What happens when all the adults on your planet go missing and it’s up to you to save the world? That’s the premise of this great book that never fails to thrill and shock you! Speaking of shocks, there is a HUGE reveal in this book that no one should miss!

2.  Earth 2 #3 :  Controversial? Yes. Outstanding? Even more so! Not only do we get to see Alan Scott become the Green Lantern in this issue, but a all-new, all-different villain enters the fray as well! For get the Green. Forget the Red. Forget the Rot. Fear the Grey!

3.  Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1 (of 6) : For me, this has been the best of prequel series! We get to see this vile villain from birth to the donning of his costume in this issue, and it is amazing! But what really solidifies it as the best, is Jae Lee’s outstanding art!

4.  Avengers Vs. X-Men #7 :  This series has done a complete 180 in the last two issues, making it exciting again! Matt Fraction writes a solid tale and Olivier Coipel’s art is top notch! Plus, an Avenger gets set on fire! And it ain’t Wolvie, kids!

5.  The Boys #68 :  Garth Ennis’ middle finger to super hero comics, is slowly coming to an end — but it’s going out with a BANG! The Boys are finding out that their fearless leader has been doing so very bad things and must be stopped. But how do you stop someone who knows everything about you? Awesome stuff!

Review: Avengers Vs. X-Men #6

After the shocking- and some what confusing- ending to issue five, this series could have gone anywhere. Fortunately for fans, Jonathan Hickman took up the reigns with this issue and created the best single story of this series yet!

Along with fan favorite, Olivier Coipel, Hickman has crafted something that is worthy of the word “classic”! The pacing of the tale is perfect, luring the reader into a world that has begun to change in the blink of an eye. We can see the awe and wonder on the characters faces, and the same emotions are dredged up in the reader as well, as something new lay before us!

War, famine, and drought have all been removed from the planet by five individuals, and the status quo has begun to shift to the meek from the mighty. So, why then is there still opposition by the Avengers, and more importantly — the government — to stop the X-Men from changing the world for the better? One word — FEAR! Fear of the unknown, fear of a power struggle, but mostly, a fear of losing an upper hand on those seen as lower class citizens.

In a time of great political unrest in our country, Hickman’s tale is sure to strike a cord with all who have ever felt that they will never get a fair shake in life. At it’s core, it is a tale of striving to not only better oneself but the world around you as well. It is about the struggle to achieve power enough to make that change and yet, when you do, you are still shunned for not doing it the way certain parties preceive to be right. What can you do when all you have achieved is still not good enough for those you have sworn to protect? You lash out, destroying the thin membrane of peace between you and hope someone will finally appreciate you in the future.

With only a single issue, Hickman has given me new hope for this series. He has given it a new life, one that will hopefully be cared for and evolved with the next writer into something even better than it is now! He has created a memoir to classic tales while crafting his own! That , my friends, is something to be proud of!

2.  The Grim Leaper #2 : An amalgam of Final Destination and Quantum Leap, this quirky series is definitely worth your time! What would you do, if you woke up in a different body and died every day? Look for love of course! Great book!

3.  Avengers Vs. X-Men #6 : Finally, this is the issue that the series should have been all along! Great art and an even better story, the Marvel U. is changing and it’s at the hands of the Phoenix Five! Awesome!

Hope’s Not The Chosen One: Look Out For The Phoenix Force Five! Wait! What?!

Just What The Doc Ordered

“1,2,3,4 — 5 Against One!”

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2022:]]Well, the message boards are blowing up regarding the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men #5. The scene in question, has the Phoenix Force entering five X-Men instead of Hope. As Hope lay unconscious, Cyclops, Colossus, Namor, Emma Frost and Magick, are chosen as the recipients of one of the most powerful cosmic energies in the universe! Shocking? Yes. Foreseen by readers? Hell, no! But what could have been an interesting idea – the first of the A vs. X series – turned out to have an already less than thrilled readership — become completely irate!

So, your personal X-pert – me – is here to set a level playing field for all readers to see if we can’t clarify the situation!

I will not delve into all the little nuances leading up to the point in question. I will however, try to give as much knowledge about the events leading up to it so everyone fully understands how we got there.

To begin, “Who is Hope?”

Hope was the first, and only, mutant birth after the events of M Day; in which the Scarlet Witch declared, “No more Mutants,” and made it so! An anomaly, she was hunted by friend and foe, and eventually was taken by Cable into the future in order to be raised away from Bishop, who blamed her for the dystopian era he came from and swore to kill her. Cable raised her from infancy to her teenage years, training her in all methods of combat and survival techniques just to survive the harsh environment they lived in. A few years ago, both Cable and Hope “time jumped” to the current Marvel U. and set off the amazing “Second Coming” storyline that ran through all the X titles! Hope was then, and is now, seen as the “Mutant Messiah” that will eventually bring forth a mutant birth resurgence. Her powers are vast, being able to manipulate all powers anywhere near her for as long as needed. But her TRUE power, is the ability to “calm” the awakening powers in the “five lights.” The “lights” are the five mutants that had latent powers manifest after Hope returned to our time. Without Hope’s guidance, their powers would have driven them insane or worse yet — killed them! Hope and her “five lights” are bonded together emotionally — whether they like it or not!

Hope has also been privy to “flare-ups” of the Phoenix Force. Though at first only Emma Frost was able to see them, now all of the X-Men have seen these glaringly scary flashes of power! Cyclops may preach that she is the Messiah of their species, but some see her as a complete terror. First among them — the Avengers!

Tony Stark and the Avengers set up a power signature tracking system that would warn them if the Phoenix Force was to enter anywhere near Earth’s atmosphere (again). Learning from the horrors Jean Grey went through with her bonding of the Phoenix Force, the Avengers will do anything to keep the cosmic entity away from Earth at all costs. That being said, when the tracking system picked up a reading, Wolverine tells Captain America exactly where the Phoenix will be heading — Utopia!

With the recent “Schism” of the X-Men, Utopia is now inhabited by what Cyclops calls his “Extinction Team.” Consisting mainly of the most powerful mutants: Namor, Magneto, Juggernaut/Colossus, Storm, Emma Frost, Hope. And led by Cyclops, these “powerhouses” make a safe haven for any mutant that seeks sanctuary. But, Cyclops hand picked this team in order to send an imposing message to all who threaten the mutant race, a message that says, “We will not be targets anymore! If you hit us — we will hit back harder!” That is exactly the message the Avengers got when they tried to take Hope from Utopia, thus started — Avengers vs. X-Men!

The battle over Hope has led to Marvel’s biggest franchises slugging it out on Earth, in space and on the moon. As most of the battle rages on Earth, the Secret Avengers are sent to space in order to stop the Phoenix Force from ever arriving. Without going into all the cosmic zaniness and team betrayals going on in this series, let’s focus on the main point —Mjolnir can hurt the Phoenix! As the team gets trounced by the Phoenix, Tony Stark and Henry Pym use the information about Thor’s hammer to create a Mech unit that can replicate Mjolnir’s power signature. It will be a last ditch effort to destroy the Phoenix, but Iron Man is ready to fly the machine into the belly of the beast.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2018:]]On Earth, a diabolical alien machine named Unit (from Kieron Gillen’s short lived S.W.O.R.D. series), was captured by the X-Men and placed in the prison block of Utopia. But he is not there against his will, in fact, Unit’s entire plan is to manipulate Hope’s bonding with the Phoenix! You see, Unit has been alive for quite some time and has seen the power of the Phoenix before on a distant planet. As he cons Hope’s “five lights” into listening to his story, and we see threads as to why the five X-Men receive the Phoenix Force unfold! According to Unit, in Uncanny X-Men #13, once there was a planet that was ruled by a lineage of demon princes. They would do everything to oppress the eventual evolution of any species in order to remain the dominant one. Eventually, a Messiah emerged and she found five acolytes that became bonded to her spiritually. She then called out to the Phoenix Force, causing the complete destruction of their oppressors and the eventual evolution of the planet. After the tale, Unit and a manipulated Danger, decimate the “five lights,” leaving Hope alone to receive the power of the Phoenix.

Hope eventually teams with Wolverine, who then calls his Avengers buddies — which is weird because Cap and Giant Man just beat the hell out of him, and they go to the moon to face the Phoenix. Lo and behold, the Avengers, Secret Avengers and Cyclops’ core “Extinction Team” all converge on the moon to deal with the Phoenix. Hope can feel its presence taking her over and screams for Wolverine to kill her; she no longer wants to be one with such a powerful creature! In the meantime, Tony Stark flies his Mech into the heart of the Phoenix causing a massive explosion that rocks everyone! As the dust settles, Hope is found unconscious, but the Phoenix has chosen its vessel anyway. Without the Messiah and her “five lights,” the Phoenix has chosen to bond with the oppressed mutants that are on the brink of extinction. Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Magick and – a now Juggernaut free – Colossus hover above all as the combined might of the Phoenix!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:2020:]]

We have already begun to see what this new Phoenix Force Five’s mission is in X-Men Legacy #268. Cyclops has traveled to Narobia and has outlawed war, disarming all militias, rebels and even the government’s army! So far, it looks as though the leader of the X-Men is trying to bring true utopia to the world at large. But can one who posses some of the most unstable cosmic power, ever truly see the world as more than a spec that needs to be cleansed? I guess we will just have to wait and see, but this preview page from Avengers vs. X-Men #6 doesn’t bode well for humanity!

So, if you made it through this lengthy article, I hope you have some clarity as to why there are five Phoenix wielders. Not that Marvel has really given us a great reason to begin with, but at least I try! So hang in there, this may just turn out to be something completely fantastic in the long run!

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s horrible!

Review: Avengers vs. X-Men #5

Well, this is it! Issue five of the story that was supposed to rock the world of comics to the ground — has hit the stands.

And I am still waiting for this book to “WOW” me in any fashion at all!

The Phoenix Force has arrived on the moon to greet the combined mass of the X-Men and the Avengers. There are slight fisticuffs, a giant robot and a pretty significant twist for an ending, but yet again — nothing REALLY happens!

There are panel after panel of heroes gawking at one another, gawking at Hope, gawking at computer screens and gawking at the heavens as the Phoenix Force approaches! If you think I am over exaggerating, you will be sorely mistaken! This story is extremely bland, it’s as if Marvel is too afraid to actually make any significant changes in the status quo of their beloved franchises to make this series the thing it was supposed to be. This was the tale that was going to be Marvel’s epic crossover between its biggest franchises, something that would usher in a new era of greatness to Marvel. Instead we get pathetic skirmishes that take place in a completely different series and a lot of name calling and finger waving! Even the shock and awe that should be felt by the coming of the Phoenix, is lost due to the poor execution of the overall tale!

This issue is supposedly the game changer for what comes next. And the ending we see in this issue, was definitely not one I saw coming! So, maybe – just maybe – this series will take an upswing next issue. At least I hope so, I was really looking forward to this series and so far it has been a total disappointment! I guess we will all find out in two weeks when there will be — “No More Avengers!”

Review: X-Men Legacy #267

Christos Gage has been writing some of the best X stories out there right now, and X-Men Legacy #267 is the best yet!

A complete Avengers Vs. X-Men tie-in, and what I mean by complete is that you don’t need to read anything else in order to understand exactly what is going on in this issue! Falcon, Moon Knight, She-Hulk and their secret weapon – Iron Man – have come to the Jean Grey School to “check-up” on our mutants. But when Moon Knight strikes Frenzy in a fit of rage, Rogue takes the gloves off — literally!

Starting right where last issue left us, the school has become a battle ground and Rogue must keep the students as safe as possible while trying to deal with the intense situation. But it’s not the exterior battle that is the must pressing one, Rogue must overcome her inner demons in order to save her friends and herself from utter destruction!

Cristos Gage makes an all out slugfest into a compelling tale of a person trying to overcome their faults in order to grow, not only as a person, but someone that others can look up to. It is a tough situation to put such a personal, and character driven piece, directly within the chaos of a battle — but Gage pulls it off flawlessly. He has developed Rogue into strong character that can finally rely on herself without having to worry about the trappings of her past failures. Making her one of my new favorite X characters! But don’t get me wrong, This book isn’t solely a soul searching character piece, there are plenty of things getting destroyed to whet the appetite of any action junkie fanboy! Especially, when Moon Knight pulls a fast one on the X-Men — can anyone say “Rogue Smash?”

Amazing art by Rafa Sandoval solidifies this tale as the best X book on the shelves this week! You want great storytelling focused on character development and utter destruction through fisticuffs — all mixed in a single book? Than you have to pick this one up!

Review: X-Men Legacy #266

(Editor’s Note: Slight Spoilers Spotted Dead Ahead!)

There is a division between those that see the Phoenix Force as the end of the world and those who dream it to be the beginning of a new one! But the division is not as simple as merely Avenger vs. X-Man. There is a deeper separation within the mutant race, one that even Team Cyclops and Team Wolverine can’t encapsulate. There is a difference between “team” and “family,” and only now is the mutant race realizing that even a schism cannot separate them for long!

Christos Gage gives us the perfect amalgam of characterization and high octane action in this issue, falling directly within the flow of Avengers vs. X-Men and not involving flashbacks — no other crossover book has so far! We see the teachers of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning ponder their places in the current war. While most of them stay to give the students a semblance of normalcy during this time of chaos, both Iceman and Rachel Grey leave to join Cyclops against the Avengers. Meanwhile, Falcon, Moon Knight and She-Hulk arrive at the school in order to “check-in” on the X-Men and make sure they won’t cause any trouble in the future. As hindsight is 20/20, maybe Falcon should have chosen his group more wisely, as it is his team that breaks rank first and brings the war down on children!

More than just another smash mouth issue, Gage writes an intelligent story dealing with the worries of a “family” and their actions. The individual choices are hard and yet, cunningly in line with each characters sense of self. There are no drastic deviations in character – like some other crossover books – and it helps the story feel realistic and true. And when the inevitable battle does ensue, it is powerful and exciting with an undercurrent of hatred and confusion. Truly, a pitch perfect offering from Gage that will resonate throughout the other X books!

Not only is Gage’s tale fantastic, but Rafa Sandoval’s art solidifies it as one of the best books this week. Sandoval is completely underrated for the talent he posses. Clean, crisp lines that give off a vibe of hyper excitement in even the most mundane sequence, Sandoval takes every page to the next level! Utterly, fantastic!

This issue has everything that a comic book reader craves in one small package! You will ponder, you will wince and you will cheer when Moon Knight gets put down like a rabid dog! So, drop three bills in the plate and worship on bended knee in the House of Gage and Sandoval! ‘Nuff said!

1. AvX Vs. #1(of 6):  Marvel’s complete and utter slugfest book hits the shelves today! With battles surrounding Iron Man vs. Magneto and the Thing vs. Namor, do I really need to sell you on this book? Okay, then check out my full review here!

2. Supercrooks #2:  Mark Millar continues his Ocean’s Eleven style tale of criminals traveling to Spain to pull the biggest heist ever! Great writing and his patented, “Holy $#*%” moments, will keep you coming back for more! Brutally sadistic!

3. Uncanny X-Men #11:  Juggy helmeted Colossus versus the Red Hulk? I’m already salivating! You will be too! This is a great book by Kieron Gillen and Greg Land that actually delivers on the promise of furthering the AvX tale along. Read my full review here!

4. American Vampire #26:  Scott Snyder continues to push the envelope with this award winning series each and every month! A new storyline begins here about racial tension in 1950’s Alabama. Review: Uncanny X-Men #11

All you need to do is look at this cover to be completely enthralled with what is to come! Juggernaut Colossus versus Red Hulk! Who isn’t itching to see how this one ends up?

You will not be disappointed with the tale Kieron Gillen and Greg Land lay before you! Taking place directly prior, during and after the events of The Avenger vs. The X-Men #1, we get to finally see a less zealous version of Cyclops. In AvX, he has been portrayed as some kind of religious nut that can’t see how dangerous his decisions are. Here, in a book written by an actual X-Men scribe, we see a leader that has to make a tough decision even though it will cause a rift between his “family” and the world’s mightiest. We also are privy to the internal thoughts of Namor, Hope and Colossus as they embark onto the battle field and will forever be changed in the process. Gillen has a great grasp on the “voice” of these individual characters, making the reader reconnect with them on a more personal level than they have in a long time. It is the perfect juxtaposition with all the chaos surrounding Utopia!

As good as the writing is, it is Greg Land’s rendering of the battle of the behemoths, that will make you not want to put this book down! An underwater barrage of giant fists awaits, and let me tell you — it is a war! Greg Land always amazes me with the skill in which he renders the female form, it is beautiful and eye catching, but today — it is all about breaking things! He creates a brutal symphony of destruction that will cause any fan to pause and take notice of how well it is done! One warrior lies at the bottom of the ocean as the other seethes in rage — absolutely amazing!

Finally, we see a book with the AvX banner tag that actually delivers something new to the story! Kudos to Kieron Gillen and Greg Land for helping this tale progress instead of completely living in the past like all the other books have! Plus, the ending is something that will set all of mutantkind on a collision course with the world that hates and fears them. If the Phoenix Force doesn’t destroy the earth, the ramifications from this ending just might!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

(A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. In no particular order!)

I do the research, you reap the reward! Before you head out to your favorite shop today, be sure to add these books to your list of goodies. Forget that apple a day nonsense, this “DOC’s” prescription to good health starts with these top five titles of the week!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1476:]]1. Batman #8:  “Night of the Owls” begins here and the lives of the “Bat” family will never be the same again! Scott Snyder is writing the best Batman stories I have ever read, now you need to too — before Gotham is taken over! Read the full review.

2. Avengers vs. X-Men #2: The gloves are off and the bell has been rung! Friend vs. friend, hero vs. hero — it all starts to fall apart here! No matter what side you’re on, I only have this to say — “Burn, baby, burn!” Read the full review.

3. B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth: The Long Death #3:  It’s the Wendigo vs. Capt. Daimo in a battle to the death! Johann’s quest for revenge against the Capt. comes to fruition, and only one “creature” will emerge alive! Hell continues to fall on the B.P.R.D. and no one is safe!

4. Fables #116: Therese has been manipulated to become the queen of Discardia, the relm of forgotten toys. But what she doesn’t know may kill her — and her entire family! There is something truly eerie about mangled stuffed animals that won’t let you leave! Creepy!

5. Justice League #8: What can I say that will entice you to buy this book more than you all ready know? How about this, there was already an eighth member of the Justice League we never knew about! Forget Green Arrow, this one is a shocker!

Advanced Review: Avengers vs. X-Men #2

The Avengers have brought war to the doorstep of Utopia, an island full of the most powerful beings on the planet. But little do they know, it is also filled with children! These are no ordinary children, these are the last of the mutant race, and even though they might not want to fight — one of them will rise up and become the most powerful being in the world!

The gloves are off, and after Cyclops let out the “eye blast heard around the world” last issue, it is time to get entrenched in battle! Marvel’s “Architects” do an amazing job of zeroing in on all the various skirmishes throughout Utopia, without making the tale feel pieced together from snippets. It is smooth, intense and a fine piece of craftsmanship that doesn’t forget to subtlety remind you that some of these battles will finish up in another book for you to purchase! But, unlike Fear Itself, where you seemed to only get half the story from the main book — everything you need to know is right here!

From thunderous punches to a veritable whose who of Utopian inhabitants (is that Hepzibah I see?), you are covered in excitement on every page! A metallic fastball special, and underwater battle of three warriors, magic, lasers, fists and speed — it’s all here for you to applaud! But this isn’t just your average smash and grab throw down, this story is multi-faceted, giving glimpses and clues of things to come! Things that may not bode well for either team of combatants!

This is adrenaline, this is excitement, this is why we buy comics! CBN’s EIC, Matt McGloin, and I used to debate who would win between the Avengers and the X-Men back when we were kids — now we finally get to see what would happen for real! Marvel is putting out every fanboy’s dream and no matter whose side you are on — we all win! This series could have gone horribly wrong, but everything is working like a well oiled machine, and we are aboard for the ride of our lives!

Once again, I will not give any spoilers! But I will leave you with one comment that I direct to Hope. “Burn, baby, Burn!” ‘Nuff said!

Is Avengers vs. X-Men Just Ripping Off What If…The X-Men Lost Inferno?

Just What The “DOC” Ordered

“The House Of Ideas Brings Out The Photocopier — Again”

By Chris “DOC” Bushley

Our latest column to hit Cosmic Book News comes from Chris “DOC” Bushley who will be taking a look at the less “cosmic” characters in comic books, and sometimes some of the more obscure, with his “Just What The Doc Ordered” column!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1411:]]With all the hype revolving around Marvel’s newest summer crossover, Avengers vs. X-men, it makes one ponder how drastic they will go to ensnare readers back into the fold. Marvel has lost it’s footing in the market place and top ten sales charts are a virtual whose who of DC talent. Fans have begun to flock elsewhere, and the mighty pockets of a certain mouse, doesn’t seem to be helping! There are rumors that A vs. X will bring many significant changes to the Marvel Universe, possibly including some very important deaths! While I except these rumors with a smile and a wink, my mind started reeling about a book I read as a kid that had all the same factors we will be seeing throughout the coming summer — What If? The X-Men Lost Inferno!

Yes, there is some division between the two ideas, A vs. X is solely Avengers versus X-Men — I get that! But there are an awful lot of comparisons between the tales too big to be ignored. The core ideas of both stories revolve around the exact same issues! Heroes vs. heroes…Check! Fighting for the very existence of the world…Check! The Phoenix Force used as a catalyst for the story…Check! The only thing missing is the apparent death of heroes in A vs. X, but you can believe me — What If? #6  is chock full of them!

What If (vol. 2) #6 was the first “What If” book I ever picked up, and probably the best one as well! In November of 1989, after the Inferno storylines had all wrapped up in their respective monthly titles, Danny Fingeroth and the amazing Ron Lim converged on an alternate reality tale that shook the world to its foundations! The characters of the Marvel 616 Universe may have come out of Inferno relatively unscathed, but in the realm of “What If” — anything goes!

Wolverine is a possessed human enslaver that eats newborns, the Hulk is a cousin killing machine of destruction, and Reed Richards and Dr. Doom work together to expand the influence of Inferno to other planes of existence! Now this is a story with ramifications! Especially when a band of heroes tries to stop the demonic influence from destroying the earth itself. But like every good story of defiance in the face of superiority — heroes must fall! Hulk snaps poor She-Hulk’s neck, the Human Torch is betrayed by Baron Mordo, Thor is blown up, Wolverine eviscerates The Captain (Steve Rogers), skewers Spider-Man like a shish kabob and kills Kitty Pryde, as well as Baron Mordo! Even after his flesh is burned away from his bones, Wolverine guts Madelyne Pryor when his skeleton is manipulated by the nearly deceased demon S’ym! Talk about a rage problem!

Finally, Dr. Strange finds that the Phoenix Force has been residing in the body of Rachel Summers, who has been transformed into a mannequin! He revives her, and the Phoenix Force is unleashed, burning all demonic influence from the face of the earth! The world has been reborn in the wake of the Phoenix, literally, as Alicia Masters-Storm gives birth to the first child of a simpler planet. As Dr. Strange holds the baby up to it’s mother, she names him Jonathan in respect for his father. In the distance, the Phoenix Force returns to its own master, the Living Tribunal, until it is needed once again!

Now, the battles did not require a separate mini-series in order to showcase all the intricate nuances between the combatants. Hell, most of them didn’t last a single page — but they didn’t need to! It was visceral, cunning and above all else — didn’t try to take all of your money to see who wins! Not that I’m not completely salivating for the next A vs. X, I just hope it delivers half as much excitement that What If #6 did — and a lot more than New Avengers #24, the first AvX tie-in!

So, the rumors are out about the possibility of Avenger and mutant blood being spilled this summer. I’ll believe it when I see it! But if you want to see some serious carnage between heroes, hit the long boxes at your local shops and look for What If? The X-Men Lost Inferno! X fans and Cosmic fans can finally sit down and enjoy a book together, one that sees some of the greatest Avengers get taken out — hard! Now let’s hope that will happen again in A vs. X! I stand with the X-Men, what about you?

Advanced Review: The New Avengers #24 (AvX)

After last month’s riveting tale of a last ditch effort to thwart the evil of Norman Osborn, fans were more than ready for another astounding tale of heroism from Bendis and crew. With a tagline boasting issue twenty-four as an A vs. X tie-in, and a cover revealing Wolverine stuck in the middle of Cap and Cyclops — fans were salivating more than a pack of Pavlov’s dogs!

But, as they say, never judge a book by its cover!

This issue begins with a thunderous blast, mere seconds after the events of A vs. X #1, but by page three we are subjected to Bendis‘ patented “talking heads” scenario! He invites us to peruse the events a day prior to the “eye beam blast heard around the world.,” and the cheesy soap opera music begins pumping into your head as you read about Jessica Jones and Luke Cage’s marital problems concerning the baby. I love character pieces that build a foundation for a book; they are needed to keep fans interested and vested in characters throughout the years. Bendis is a great writer, and truly knows the motivations of the characters he breathes life into, but this book is not the time nor the place for one of these character pieces. This issue is the first to carry the A vs. X tagline for a continuing series — but we see none of it! Literally, by the last page you are still at the same spot that the story began! Besides marital tension — NOTHING HAPPENS!

Plus, I know Bendis hasn’t written many X characters before, but his take on Storm is ridiculous! You have one of the most affluent, powerful and strong willed characters that has lead the X-Men through many hardships, and at the mere mention of the Phoenix Force she utters, “Goddess” and flies away? She is the Queen of Wakanda, and she doesn’t even try to talk about the ramifications of a battle between the X-Men and Avengers? Are you kidding me?

If you are looking for and A vs. X tie-in that will give you something more than a Lifetime movie — you won’t find it here! If you are looking for an Avengers tale that will get your testosterone flowing — pick up Avengers Assemble #2 instead! If you are just getting this to jump on The Avengers bandwagon, save your four bucks and upgrade to IMAX tickets — I wish I had!
