First Look At Netflix Voltron

Check out a first look at the new Voltron that is coming to Netflix (updated with poster).

The new series is titled Voltron: Legendary Defender and will feature thirteen 22-minute episodes airing later this year. This weekend’s WonderCon will debut the first footage.

“We’re trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show,” co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery told USA Today.

Voltron: Legendary Defender features the five Earth teenagers – Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro – in addition to Princess Alura. The latter five “are thrown into the middle of an intergalactic battle and become the last line of defense for Arus and other planets against an evil alien force led by King Zarkon.” Alura doesn’t start off as a fighter at first, but is “still a princess from a peaceful kingdom. But she’s certainly not fainting at every little thing that overwhelms her.”

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Expand Global Relationship Jan 05, 2016

Voltron and a New Fantasy World from Guillermo Del Toro Among Series Debuting in 2016

Netflix, Inc. and DreamWorks Animation today announced the expansion of their current multi-year deal, making Netflix the global home, outside of China, to a number of new original series for the whole family from the studio. The deal also covers streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library.

In addition, the deal extends the rights of current original series for kids from the studio available on the service throughout operating Netflix markets as well as expanding to include second window rights for the series everywhere around the world, outside of China. Series include The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux, Dragons: Race to the Edge, among others.

Starting in 2016, Netflix will launch several new series from DWA, including a reimagining of Voltron, and the new series, Trollhunters, from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro, who will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.

Over the term of the new agreement, a number of new original series will be developed and produced by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix, based not only on recent and upcoming feature films from the studio, but also on other classic IP.

“This agreement adds to the incredible foundation we’ve built together with Netflix over a number of years across both film and television,” said Ann Daly, President of DreamWorks Animation. “We are proud to work closely with Netflix to continue delivering high-quality programming to audiences around the world.”

SDCC 2013: Dynamite Announces Robotech/Voltron Series

Press Release

SDCC Announcement – Robotech Returns
In Crossover With Voltron!
Dynamite Partners with DC Entertainment,
World Events Productions, and Harmony Gold

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9328:]]

July 16, 2013, Mt. Laurel, NJ:  Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that they have acquired the rights to publish comic books based on the beloved science fiction anime, Robotech®.  In a unique sub-licensing arrangement with DC Entertainment and with the Harmony Gold USA, Dynamite Entertainment will publish a new series beginning with a Robotech / Voltron crossover event.  This crossover marks the first time uniting the popular Robotech cast with the five lions of Voltron, a fan-favorite World Events Production property.

The Robotech series debuted in 1985, an adaptation combining concepts from three Japanese anime series (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimension Century Southern Cross) into a new, cohesive narrative.  It followed three generations of Earth soldiers who salvaged and repurposed alien technology in combat against consecutive extraterrestrial invasions, and was animated by the renowned animation studio Tatsunoko Production Co.

Voltron, based on the story of five robotic lions piloted by a team of brave space explorers that combine to form a mighty metallic hero, launched in the U.S. in September of 1984 and quickly became a #1 rated animated series that will celebrate its 30th Anniversary in 2014.

“Robotech and Voltron are two of the most recognizable anime series that defined ’80s pop culture,” says Tommy Yune, creative director at Harmony Gold and mastermind behind the upcoming crossover.  “Both franchises have endured in their popularity today and fans have long speculated of an epic crossover between the universes.  The opportunity to do so is an honor, and it’s a welcome challenge to construct a storyline that works well with key characters on both sides.  Most important of all, it’s going to be a lot of fun with plenty of surprises.”

“Robotech is one of the finest intellectual properties ever to come out of Japan, and we are so very fortunate to be able to contribute to its legacy of thrilling science fiction action and drama,” says Nick Barrucci, CEO/Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment.  “We’re also thankful to have such great partners on the Robotech journey, DC Comics and Harmony Gold, and joining us in this incredible first-ever crossover with Classic Media’s Voltron.  We’ve published Voltron for years, and this is definitely rewarding to place the two fan-favorite universes together.”

“Skyscraper-sized robots and city-crushing monsters are no strangers to the Dynamite gang, thanks to our fine experience with the Voltron license,” adds Barrucci.  “We’ve been the proud home to Voltron since 2011, and I think our talented creators and editorial staff really balanced the science fiction and space fantasy elements of that franchise with the human story of its pilots.  We’re very excited to continue the adventures of the Five Lions and the Voltron Force pilots as part of the crossover penned by Tommy Yune, and recapture the very best qualities of our previous Voltron series in this exciting new venture.  Robotech / Voltron is a fan’s dream, one we’re thrilled to add to our line of comics!”

The new Robotech / Voltron team-up adds additional content to Dynamite’s existing Voltron projects, published as two series thus far and expanding the mythos licensed from World Events Productions.  The first-ever pairing of these two giant animated properties is expected to attract huge media and fan attention in time for Voltron’s 30th Anniversary.  A new Robotech series will follow in the wake of the crossover.

The appreciation for the original Robotech television series, its comic spin-offs, and expansive universe of additional content runs deep at Dynamite, as evidenced by the passionate reflections of Joe Rybandt, the company’s Senior Editor.  “Every day after school, I would watch Robotech and I loved it.  LOVED IT.  Probably for a lot of the same reasons that I loved Claremont’s Uncanny X-Men, in that it was soap opera mixed with incredible action and excitement.  Also, it was my first introduction to episodic television starring giant robots and, y’know, GIANT ROBOTS.  I’ve gone back to the show every now and again, and still find it a rewarding experience, filled with great characters and amazing design. And now, here I sit, getting ready to set a new course with the comics.”

Dynamite Announces ‘Voltron: Year One’ Comic Book Series

Press Release

DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES AN ALL-NEW VOLTRON® COMIC BOOK SERIES!

The Second Series, Voltron®: Year One, Available In Stores April 2012

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:454:]]

January 19th, 2011, Runnemede, NJ – After experiencing great success with Voltron #1, Dynamite Entertainment is bringing back the iconic Defender of the Universe in an all-new adventure! Written by Brandon Thomas, illustrated by Craig Cermak, with covers by Admira Wijaya and Jonathan Lau, Voltron: Year One will be released wherever comic books are sold beginning April 2012.

Voltron® is the ultimate action franchise and these epic stories from Dynamite Entertainment take fans deeper into the adventure,” said Colin McLaughlin, Senior Licensing Manager, Classic Media. “After the success of the first series, we are looking forward to the unveiling of the second.”

Before they were known as the legendary Voltron Force, they were Space Explorer Squadron #686 of the Galaxy Alliance — four young men, led by Commander Sven, tasked with keeping the Earth safe and the skies clear in an increasingly dangerous universe. It was no surprise that central command came to them first with an impossible rescue mission and asked them to face an enemy even they didn’t truly understand – one that threatens the fragile coalition of planets they’ve risked their lives to maintain.

“Brandon has brought a bold new edge to the Voltron Force and proven himself to be an authentic Voltron fan and skilled storyteller,” says Jeremy Corray, Creative Director, World Events Productions.  “We can’t wait for the surprising twists and turns he will bring to the secret origins of the Space Explorers and we know fans will be as intrigued as we are.”

“Finally, one of the greatest (though misunderstood) characters in the entire Voltron mythos gets a chance in the spotlight, as we dig into his time leading Space Explorer Squadron #686, soon to be known as the legendary Voltron Force,” says writer Brandon Thomas. “In the fateful missions leading up to the rediscovery of Voltron, any and all burning questions will be answered—what’s the real reason Sven’s tenure piloting the Blue Lion was always destined to be a short one? What event ensured that Keith and Lance would forever be rivals? Why has Pidge always been the most dangerous member of the team? And the biggest burning question of all—did the Galaxy Alliance send this particular squad of space explorers after Voltron because they thought they would succeed or because they knew they would fail?”[[wysiwyg_imageupload:455:]]

“Brandon [Thomas] is taking everything you thought you knew about the Voltron Force and turning it end over end in the most exciting way possible,” states Dynamite Editor, Joe Rybandt. “He’s getting inside the head of these characters and showing each and every one as you’ve never seen them before.”

After blazing onto TV screens in 1984, Voltron:  Defender of the Universe quickly became a top-rated animated series. Voltron features a team of five young space explorers in command of five robot lions that combine to form Voltron. The Voltron Force protect the planet Arus, ruled by Princess Allura, from the evil King Zarkon of Planet Doom and his monstrous Robeasts.

Voltron is owned by World Events Productions and represented by Classic Media.
