Star Wars: A New Hope debuted 40 years ago today!

The movie opened May 25, 1977!

Disney took to Twitter to commemorate the date by releasing the original trailer:

George Lucas directed and wrote Star Wars: A New Hope which of course starred Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, Alec Guinness as Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Kenny Baker as R2-D2, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca and David Prowse as Darth Vader. John Williams performed the score.

Star Wars: A New Hope grossed a whopping $775,398,007 worldwide back in 1977, which in today’s dollars would be $3,118,587,636.97! Yep! That’s 3 billion!

I can remember the first time watching Star Wars, which was on HBO.
