Sony has revealed a new villain for the upcoming Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse animated movie with The Spot.
Following the CinemaCon footage, new footage was shown off at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this morning revealing Jason Schwartzman, known for Fargo and more, will be providing the voice of the Spidey villain.
In the Marvel comics, The Spot is Dr. Jonathan Ohnn who has the ability to open interdimensional portals, as well as smaller-scale ones, which he uses to travel long distances instantly and commit crimes. The Spot also exists in the Ultimate Universe where he is named Frank and has similar powers to the 616 version but is drawn a bit differently.
According to Deadline, The Spot will also be a villain in the sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and says the character’s powers include that the spots on his body can send him into any dimension he wants to go.
Update: Footage also revealed Jorma Taccone voicing Vulture.
Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.
The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson; produced by Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg; co-produced by Alonzo Ruvalcaba; the screenplay is by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and David Callaham; the executive producers are Peter Ramsey and Aditya Sood, and the cast includes Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, and Hailee Steinfeld.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse arrives in theaters on June 2, 2023, and the sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, opens on March 29, 2024.
