Pirates Of The Caribbean Gets BitCoin Hacker Ransom

Pirates Of The Caribbean Gets BitCoin Hacker Ransom

Update: Disney CEO Bob Iger is stating the threat wasn’t real.

Hackers have aquired a copy of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and are holding it ransom demanding a large payment of BitCoin from Disney.

Deadline reports Disney CEO Bob Iger stated they will not be paying the BitCoin ransom to the hackers.

The hackers are said to have threatened to release bits of the movie in increments if the BitCoin ransom is not paid.

It’s presently unknown how the hackers aquired the copy of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but a former hacker fills in Deadline they probably got it from a less secure company outside of Disney, such as a vendor, smaller production company, etc.

Netflix suffered from a similar BitCoin ransom which saw 10 episodes of Orange Is The New Black released online. Netflix didn’t pay the ransom.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens in ten days, so it remains to be seen how the release of the movie online will affect sales.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens May 26 directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg starring Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem.
