Melissa Benoist Cast As Supergirl

[page_title]

CBS announced that Melissa Benoist has been cast as Supergirl.

Benoist is known for Glee and Whiplash.

Supergirl sees Kara Zor-El, cousin to Superman, having escaped the destruction of Krypton and arriving on Earth where she is taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who are aware of her super powers and teach her to be careful using them.

The series is further described as:

Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl.

Greg Berlati of Arrow and The Flash will co-write the Supergirl script with Ali Adler, who recently teased a big Supergirl announcement was coming soon.

Though Supergirl is set for CBS, a crossover with Arrow and The Flash hasn’t been ruled out, and actually the Supergirl TV series was created with the potential for all three series to be set in the same universe.

Melissa Benoist follows Grant Gustin, who was also featured in Glee, as the latest superhero in the DC TV universe.

As THR notes, Benoist played the role of a superhero in an episode of Glee as “Woman Fierece” (watch the video below).

Benoist took to Twitter to offer her excitement, and Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin offered congratulations.
