What is the Greek poem about?

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem traditionally attributed to Homer and thought to have been composed around the 8th century BCE. A foundational work of Western literature, it serves as a sequel to The Iliad. The story follows Odysseus, the resourceful King of Ithaca, as he faces a perilous ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters legendary challenges, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the alluring Sirens, and the sorceress Circe.

Odysseus also contends with the whims of the gods, receiving guidance from Athena while enduring Poseidon’s wrath. Meanwhile, in Ithaca, his wife Penelope defends herself against persistent suitors who believe Odysseus is dead, and their son Telemachus sets out to learn of his father’s fate.
