James Gunn released a first look at Peacemaker Season 2 on Wednesday offering a look at a mystery character, which some fans think might be Apache Chief. My guess? How about Hawkman?
“Who might this be?” Gunn teased.
The image shows a shot of a man from behind out in the woods in front of a fire who looks like a Native American.
Is James Gunn’s mystery character Apache Chief?
Apache Chief actually wasn’t an original DC Comics character but first appeared in The All-New Super Friends Hour and then, where he is more known, in Challenge of the Superfriends. It’s probably safe to say Gunn watched Superfriends as a kid, so using Apache Chief in Peacemaker Season 2 could be a possibility.
Gunn’s social media is lit up with guesses as to the identity of the mystery character. Since Apache Chief has the power to increase his size (a la Giant-Man), some fans even think Gunn might be using Giganta either in Peacemaker Season 2 or even his Superman movie, so again, Apache Chief would fit.
Is James Gunn’s mystery character Hawkman?
Some other possible characters could be Ohiyesa “Pow-Wow” Smith, Chief Man-of-Bats, Raven Red, Brave Bow, The Navajo Ace, Super-Chief, Little Sure Shot, Seneca, Manitou Raven, Black Condor, Tomaha, or even Hawkman.
In Ostrander’s 1993 run, the Thanagarian Katar Hol’s mother was in fact a Navajo medicine woman who took an extraterrestrial lover. Gunn happens to be a fan of Ostrander and was inspired by Ostrander’s Suicide Squad. Isabela Merced also happens to be playing Hawkgirl in Gunn’s Superman.
Here are the condensed details:
In 1993, John Ostrander redefined Hawkman by connecting the character to Native American heritage. Specifically, he introduced the Anigiduwagi (Cherokee) roots through Naomi Carter, a medicine woman known as the Faraway Woman. Naomi had a son, Katar Hol, with a Thanagarian named Paran Katar, who deceitfully banished her to Earth and kept their son. Later, Naomi helped heal and guide Katar, reconnecting him to his Anigiduwagi heritage.
