James Gunn is once again publicly questioning the long-term future of the DCU, admitting in a new interview that running DC Studios while directing films may not be sustainable.
Speaking with Variety, Gunn openly acknowledged the strain of serving as both a filmmaker and studio head, raising fresh doubts about how long he can realistically stay in the role.
Of course, this all lines up with the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery, where we have been told Gunn will be out as head of DC Studios.
James Gunn Questions Whether the DCU Model Can Last
When asked about juggling creative and executive responsibilities, Gunn made it clear the situation is far from settled.
âI still donât know if itâs sustainable long-term,â Gunn said. âItâs a lot. There just arenât enough hours in the day.â
Rather alarming for DCU fans is that Gunn described DC Studios as an âexperiment,â which obviously implies things arenât set in stone.
He also revealed he initially turned down the job, saying he never wanted to replicate Kevin Feigeâs Marvel-style oversight.
Gunn added that only after partnering with Peter Safran did the position become appealing, but the workload remains overwhelming, which is what weâve been told Gunn will use as an excuse to make his graceful exit.
Prestige vs Pop Cinema
Similar to what our insiders filled me in at last Comic-Con, Gunn also downplayed awards ambitions, saying prestige filmmaking is not his focus.
âI donât care about prestige,â Gunn said. âI like making pop cinema, for lack of a better term.â
While he acknowledged that awards recognition would be nice, Gunn emphasized that blockbuster spectacle is what motivates him creatively.
