Following the big Oscars nomination for best visual effects, James Gunn reveals he is bringing his Guardians of the Galaxy 3 VFX team to his Superman: Legacy movie as part of the DCU.

Tuesday saw the news that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has been nominated for best VFX along with The Creator, Godzilla: Minus One, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and Napoleon.

“Congrats to @stefceretti & the whole VFX team! Our VFX crew worked tirelessly from top to bottom to create photorealistic characters and outrageous worlds,” posted Gunn on Instagram. “

Gunn added, “The world fell in love with Lylla, Floor, and Teefs – not to mention Rocket and Groot – because of them. Audiences were enmeshed in the Orgoscope and Arête and Counter Earth because of their amazing partnership with our production design department. They’ve already won my heart – which is why I’m bringing nearly all of them to Superman Legacy. But I’m so happy they have this honor as well.”

Following the Oscar nomination, Stephane Ceretti, who also did the VFX on Captain America: First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame, Eternals, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, posted the following on Instagram.

“We are taking our beloved raccoon to the Visual Effects Society, the BAFTA the Oscars and many other award ceremonies ! I am so proud of the work accomplished by our talented #VFX artists all around the world. They have been amazing creative partners for us and gave so much joy bringing the story of Rocket to the screen,” he said.

Ceretti continued, “We would not be here without the energy and creativity of our writer/director James Gunn, the amazing teams at Marvel Studios lead by Kevin Feige, my fabulous producer Susan Pickett, and my fearless VFX team. But also without the imagination of the production team, designers, costume, stunts, legacy’s prosthetic work, make up and hair, camera crews etc etc.”

He added, “We also could not have made you cry for the fate of these animals without the talent of the actors who gave their heart to portait them for us – Sean Gunn, Bradley Cooper, Linda Cardellini, Mikaela Hoover and Asim Chaudhry. I have so much love for the Guardians family lead by Chris Pratt. None of our VFX would look real if their acting didn’t create the illusion and suspension of disbelief to support them. I love my guardians family and I miss it every day!”

Superman: Legacy is said to film in March and gets released July 11, 2025.

Starring in the movie includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi playing Mister Terrific. María Gabriela de Faría is also playing The Engineer from The Authority described as a “villain.” Skyler Gisondo is Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio is Eve Teschmacher. Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor. Sean Gunn is playing Maxwell Lord in the DCU, though it’s not clear if he will be in Superman: Legacy. It’s also rumored Supergirl will appear in the film prior to her own solo movie.
