It’s learned that Warner Bros. is developing new movies for both Goonies and Gremlins.
In its report about its upcoming 2025 slate, Deadline reports on the Warner Bros. franchise hopes down the road which includes Christopher Columbus directing a new Gremlins movie. Regarding Goonies, it’s said a treatment is currently underway:
Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.
What is going on with Gremlins?
Last we saw of Gremlins was the prequel animated series that lasted for two seasons with “Secrets of the Mogwai ” and “The Wild Batch.”
On the live-action side of things, Gremlins 2: The New Batch was released in 1990 prior to the 1984 original Gremlins movie.
What is known about Goonies 2?
A sequel to The Goonies has been rumored for years, but there’s finally some official word—though it’s still far from confirmed. Currently, only a treatment exists for Goonies II, which means the project is far from greenlit.
Recently, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton, who played Mouth and Stef in the original film, stated that Goonies II isn’t happening. Given that there’s only a treatment, it’s likely none of the original actors have been contacted about the potential sequel.
Rumors suggest that the original cast members are expected to return, with the sequel likely focusing on their kids embarking on a new adventure. The original cast includes Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan.
The Goonies is also back in theaters Sunday and Monday for the film’s 40th anniversary.
