Dwayne Johnson has taken to social media to announce that he is teaming with J.J. Abrams on a new mystery project along with writer Zack Penn.
Johnson included an image from the meeting and posted, “Years in the making – we finally broke bread, we drank, we laughed, got a lil’ drunk (maybe that was just me) we talked life stuff, love stuff, dude stuff and took our time chopping up our passion for movies and storytelling. Then we all raised a glass and toasted to….”
He continued, “Yup, this one is gonna be fun. JJ & DJ. From the mind of Zak Penn.”
Johnson teased, adding, “…tonight, it comes to life…”

What is the Dwayne Johnson, J.J. Abrams, and Zak Penn mystery project?
Again, the project is unknown and it is unknown if J.J. Abrams will be directing the Dwayne Johnson project. Abrams hasn’t directed anything in years, since the release of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker which first went into production in 2018. J.J. Abrams is more known as of late for producing through his Bad Robot production company. However, according to IMDb, Abrams will be directing the HBO series, Duster. He is also listed as directing Demimonde but that was recently said to be canceled.
Zack Penn is known for writing the Beacon 23 series, Free Guy, Ready Player One, the LEGO Marvel’s Avengers video game, Alphas, Marvel’s 2008 The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand, the Fantastic Four video game, Elektra, X2: X-Men United, Inspector Gadget, Last Action Hero, and more.
Upcoming projects for Dwayne Johnson include the Christmas movie where Santa is kidnapped, Red One (out Nov 15), Moana 2, and the live-action Moana.
IMDb also lists other projects The Rock is said to be involved with and one that stands out that seems to fit with Johnson, Abrams and Penn could be the Doc Savage movie.
Could it be the Doc Savage movie?
Back in 2016 saw it said that Dwayne Johnson will be starring in a Doc Savage movie. At the time, Shane Black was supposed to be directing, but the flick never came to fruition. Worth a mention is that Johnson said his new J.J. Abrams project is years in the making. Zack Penn also has comic book and superhero writing experience.
