Captain Marvel Leads New Team Of Avengers, Marvel Cuts Multiverse

Captain Marvel leads the new team of Avengers as Marvel Comics has released a new trailer for Avengers #1 which gets released next month from writer Jed MacKay and artist C.F. Villa with the word they are cutting the Multiverse stories.

“Avengers…assemble! A new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes stand against a cascade of world-ending cataclysms in a new series by writer Jed Mackay and artist C.F. Villa this May,” teases the video description. Watch the trailer below.

Why is Captain Marvel the new Avengers leader?

Marvel.com confirms who makes up this team of Avengers which is “led by Captain Marvel that includes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, and Vision” and “these Avengers will quickly find themselves pulled into the Tribulation Events, a series of grand-scale disasters that will spark upheaval throughout the known universe.”

It’s also probably no coincidence that Captain Marvel is the leader of The Avengers as The Marvels starring Brie Larson was originally supposed to be released in July but has been delayed until November.

“Putting her [Captain Marvel] in the big seat of the Avengers is a logical progression for the character, to my mind, and applying the challenges of leading a team like the Avengers to a character with the sensibilities of a brash fighter pilot has been a lot of fun,” MacKay filled in Polygon.

Marvel Comics EIC C.B. Cebulsksi even goes so far as to say this is Marvel’s “core team” and interestingly enough says they are dropping the Multiverse stories.

“Jed is taking over and kind of going in a different direction, refocusing the Avengers back on the core team,” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski explained. “I think fans have seen and they’re going to know and love some of the beloved characters and they’re going to be more earthbound this time, or not dimension-spanning, Multiverse-spanning—focusing on the Marvel Universe proper, protecting Earth and the surrounding galaxy which we all inhabit. I’m really excited.”

The details for the relaunch include the Avengers will encounter the classic foe Terminus and a group of bizarre new villains called the Ashen Combine during the Tribulation Events.

The Ashen Combine takes pleasure in destroying cities and was released by Kang during his search for “The Missing Moment” in TIMELESS (2022) #1. The Avengers will be tested to determine if they are truly the greatest heroes of all reality as they confront the Fall of the Impossible City and other extraordinary challenges. Can the Avengers overcome these earth-shattering threats and emerge victorious from the Tribulation Events? Or will they be mere pawns in an extraordinary scheme beyond their comprehension?
