We get new details about the next Avengers movie as it is reported Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy is in talks to possibly direct the fifth installment in the MCU.
In Deadline’s report, they mention that Levy is in talks to direct another Marvel movie, which they suggest could be Avengers 5.
Shawn Levy has been given the Avengers 5 script
The report says Shawn Levy has been given the latest Avengers 5 script which was written by Michael Waldron.
It’s said their sources have said Levy hasn’t given an answer on whether he will come aboard the film as of yet.
It’s further said that in the meantime, Marvel is planning on meeting with other directors while Levy makes his decision.
Additional details include it stated that even though Avengers 5 doesn’t have a director and that the script was only recently turned in, Marvel has been working hard in recently months so they can start filming next year.
Update: In their report, THR mentions Levy was given the script last week. They also say Levy was offered the gig back in March but that he turned it down, as scheduling was the concern at the time, with Levy involved with Deadpool & Wolverine and the final season of Stranger Things. It’s said Marvel has pushed things back which has opened the potential for Levy to direct. THR also adds, “The project was once going to be ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,’ but has been reconceived.”
More than 60 MCU characters
According to Deadline’s sources, the plans for Avengers 5 include using more than 60 MCU characters, with it said “everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillan.”
While the previous Avengers movies centered around a core group of Assemblers (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow), it’s said Avengers 5 will give many of the characters equal footing, “making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team.”
Who is the villain or villains?
With Jonathan Majors out as the villain, Kang, it’s also said it is unknown who the main villain of Avengers 5 will be, or even if there could be multiple villains.
Avengers 5 has a May 1, 2026 release date.
