Invincible Actor Bails On Series: 'Too grueling on my psyche'

Aaron Paul confirmed he will not return as Powerplex in Invincible, explaining that the emotional weight of the character pushed him to step away despite his love for the series.

Paul voiced Powerplex in a pair of episodes and said the experience took more out of him than he expected.

Paul Says the Role Took a Toll

Speaking candidly with the Kinda Funny Games YouTube channel, Paul said the character’s intensity and trauma ended up affecting him on a personal level.

“I did a couple of episodes, and they asked me to come back for next season, but I’ve got to tell you… that show, I’m such a fan of. I watch every episode. I love. It was just way too grueling on my psyche,” Paul said. “It was such an emotional… I have such respect for what they’re doing.”

He added that fully inhabiting Powerplex was the issue.

“Powerplex is not just messing around. He’s going through things. Turmoil. I put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest,” Paul explained. “I didn’t want to do it anymore. The thing is, everyone involved in that is amazing. What it did to me, I didn’t like. I couldn’t continue.”

What This Means for Powerplex

With Paul stepping away, the series will likely recast the role or shift Powerplex’s presence in upcoming episodes.

In the comics and the series, Powerplex — real name Scott Duvall — is villain in Invincible. He’s a delusional and emotionally unstable scientist driven by an obsessive need for revenge against Invincible, blaming him for the accidental deaths of his sister and niece, as well as the tragic, self-inflicted deaths of his own wife and son.

The crew behind Invincible has not commented yet on who will take over or how the character will be handled going forward.
