This past weekend saw the Zack Snyder Batman vs. Superman event held where the director talked about his version of Justice League. Among the details revealed include that the original version by Snyder and Chris Terrio was deemed too crazy and nuts to film, so the script had to be re-written.
“When [Batman v Superman] came out, understand that Chris Terrio and I had finished the script for Justice League before this movie came out, right. So that script was done,” Snyder explained. “Movie came out and some people didn’t like the movie. A vocal minority [laughs]. So I was asked by the studio to like, ‘Hey, you can’t… There is a lot of stuff that we don’t want you to do from that script.’ So we did a rewrite, right, of the script. So the original Justice League that Chris and I wrote, we didn’t even shoot. I mean there is a lot of it that we shot, but the actual idea, the hard hard idea, the scary idea, we never filmed, because the studio was like ‘that’s crazy.’ And we were so insecure at the time after [Batman v Superman] came out. We were like, ‘I guess it is crazy. Like we’re f’n nuts. There’s going to be mass hysteria in the streets if we film this.’ It’s a long story.”
The crowd at the event then got on Snyder’s case asking for more details, with Snyder revealing it would have had a lot to do with the Knightmare Batman world.
“The truth is the Knightmare sequence in this movie, right, was always my idea that all of that would be eventually explained, of course, and that we would end up in the distant future where Darkside has taken over Earth and where Superman has succumbed to the Ant-Life and now with his rag-tag band…” Snyder said. “There was a few members of the Justice League that have survived to that world and that they were fighting to try and… So Batman is with the broken half of Cyborg, because there is only half of him because of whatever happened. They were working on an equation to jump Flash back to tell Bruce… you know obviously.”
Snyder then went on to further explain how a Justice League teaser released that wasn’t in the movie featured Batman and Wonder Woman talking how Lois Lane was the key, and that if she died, Superman would succumb to the Anti-Life. It also meant if Superman somehow knew that it was Bruce’s responsibility to protect Lois, he would have been mad at him in Batman vs. Superman.
Snyder continued with mention of the scene in the Knightmare world where they talked about jumping back in time again. Snyder explained there were only two windows to jump back to any specific point, depending on the rotation of the Earth. So The Flash had already used one and it didn’t work, so Batman said to use the other. It would have involved The Flash jumping back right before Darkseid was going to Boom Tube into the Batcave and kill Lois Lane.
Some other details revealed at the event include that there are nine or ten cuts of the Justice League movie, that it is almost 4 hours long, with his true version coming in at 214 minutes in length (3 hrs 34 minutes), that the VFX would still need to be finished, and that it is up to WB to release the Snyder Cut.
