The Amazon-owned IMDb website has released a list of its top ten movies for 2019, and TV shows from 2018, which includes Marvel’s The Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and more.
Regarding the films, the site offers the movies are “consistently most popular with IMDb users as determined by the actual page views of the more than 250 million monthly unique visitors to IMDb worldwide.”
For the TV shows, they offer the list is “based on user popularity” as well.
Interestingly enough, the live-action Lion King and Star Wars: Episode IX did not make the movie list.
As IMDb is basically just an information database, it doesn’t mean fans aren’t anticipating them, it just may mean they are more aware of them and haven’t searched for information. Likewise, the opposite holds true.
Case in point is that Captain Marvel tops the list, which is doubtfully the most anticipated movie of 2019 (lol). It’s also unknown if the results for The Avengers: Endgame take in account that the movie’s title was just released, meaning when IMDb had the page as “untitled,” if those views were taken into account as well.
Probably a better indication of the most anticipated movie would be trailer views, which is proven by the simple fact The Avengers: Endgame has nearly 300% more views than Captain Marvel on YouTube. It should also be noted IMDb didn’t take into account video and trailer views on their own site, but only page views (which further proves the point).
A more suitable title is probably “most searched for 2019 movies” and “most searched for 2018 TV shows” – not anticipated (click-bait).
