Walking Dead Movies and Spinoffs In Development

Walking Dead Movies and Spinoffs In Development

Back in July, I put it forth that The Walking Dead movie starring Andrew Lincoln might be possible, and while that has yet to be announced, it’s learned the network has plans for films and more spinoffs that will stretch for at least the next ten years.

AMC actually hinted at their larger The Walking Dead universe when, back in January, they first announced that former showrunner Scott Gimple would be “elevated to Chief Content Officer, overseeing the entire Dead television universe, including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and potential brand extensions on a variety of platforms.”

Now details on those brand extensions are in part known as Bloomberg offers AMC has a ten year plan in place for new movies and TV series.

It’s reported AMC wants to produce several The Walking Dead movies for a TV network or streaming service that could lead to additional spinoff series.

It’s also said AMC wants to take the brand overseas with a new series set in a different country, as the show has a huge international following.

According to the report, all cards are on the table, as AMC wants to partner to develop the movies and new spinoffs, which could include potential partnerships with Disney, Amazon, Hulu, NBC or Netflix. It is noted that AMC would like any new TV series to air on their network, but again, they are currently taking an open approach.

It’s further said that while the audience for The Walking Dead has declined from a high of 19 million in 2015 to an average of 11 million, AMC is looking for ways to expand that doesn’t overextend the property and lives on in many forms similar to Star Wars and Star Trek.

Regarding my thoughts on why Andrew Lincoln could star in a The Walking Dead movie, the actor said, “…it’s my last season on the TV show, The Walking Dead,” which could be doublespeak for a movie (as he said “TV show”). It is known Lincoln wanted to stop doing the series because it takes so much time away from his family in the UK, but a movie could always be filmed in London.

The Walking Dead Season 9 premiers Sunday, October 7 on AMC starring Andrew Lincolm as Rick Grimes, Danai Gurira as Michonne, Lauren Cohan as Maggie, Norman Reedus as Daryl, Melissa McBride as Carol, Khary Payton as Ezekiel, Seth Gilliam as Father Gabriel, Josh McDermitt as Eugene, Christian Serratos as Rosita, Ross Marquand as Aaron, Avi Nash as Siddiq, Tom Payne as Jesus, Katelyn Nacon as Enid, Pollyanna McIntosh as Anne (a.k.a. Jadis), Cooper Andrews as Jerry, Alanna Masterson as Tara and Callan McAuliffe as Alden.
