The new live-action Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds, has been given a release date as Universal Pictures has slated the film for May 10, 2019.
Ryan Reynolds plays the titular character and will perform the part as motion-capture.
Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Little Big Lies) also star in the movie, with the film following Smith’s character’s father who has been kidnapped, which forces the teen to team up with Detective Pikachu in order to find him. Newton’s character is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.
Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls, upcoming animated Spider-Man movie) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel) wrote the latest draft of the Detective Pikachu script.
Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing Detective Pikachu, which is due to start filming mid-January in London.
The release date also comes a week after the debut of Marvel’s untitled Avengers 4.
