Before there was Voltron: The Legendary Defender on Netflix, there was the 1984 Voltron Defender of the Universe series!
Now twelve episodes of the original Voltron are streaming on Netflix. Watch the promo below.
I happened to be a huge fan of Voltron as a kid and even have my original toys from back then. Regarding the new series, which currently has two seasons and I’ve only watched a handful of episodes, it’s not bad, but it doesn’t come close to the original, IMO.
The new series is a bit on the goofy side; some of the characters are annoying (Coran is just an awful character now, Allura is irritating, and the Witch Haggar’s voice was pretty iconic back in the day, but the new version doesn’t even compare); the new Voltron series is also lacking some sort of inconic theme music, some of the episodes feel drawn out, and the we have to “feel” the Lions and Voltron mumbo jumbo is eye rolling, to say the least.
Again, I’m a diehard Voltron fan, so to be honest, anything they did with the character/series probably wouldn’t satisfy me, but I’m willing to give it a chance. My nine-year-old does like the series, so there is that.
Another complaint: The Voltron combiner toys are hard to frickin’ find! I’ve only been able to find three of the Voltron combiners (Black, Blue and Red) in stores. I really don’t feel like shelling out extra cash on eBay for the combiners when they should be more readily available. They’re basically sold out in stores all around the country from what I’ve seen. I’m not sure why that is unless they originally weren’t sure if they would sell a lot, leading to a shortage. Hopefully that changes and more Voltron toys are put into production.
