Man of Steel Opens #1 In Japan For American Movies

Good news Superman fans, Man of Steel continues to fly as it has opened this past weekend #1 amongst American movies.

Man of Steel raked in $2.7 million trailing the Japanese movie, The Wind Rises, which has been holding the top spot in Japan for the past five weeks.

Japanese movies traditionally perform better at their own domestic box office with even Iron Man 3 ($4.2 million) getting beat out in April/May by Meitantei Conan Private Eye, which ran #1 for four consecutive weeks as well.

Man of Steel currently has about a $660 million wordwide gross.

We can see the difference in Japanese movie tastes compared to their Amerian friends by the fact that Oblivion ($3.4 million) performed really well as did After Earth ($2,047,066).

Giving a further perspective: In July, The Wind Rises saw an $8.25 million opening weekend in Japan, with Monsters University taking $8.37 million.

The box office return for Man of Steel has led to Warner Bros. green lighting a Batman/Superman movie set for a July 17, 2015 release starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
