Prior to the release of the Fantastic Four reboot, Fox Studios announced the sequel for a 2017 release; however, seeing how poorly the movie did this Summer at the box office, it’s possible the sequel won’t happen.
Writer and producer Simon Kinberg, who worked on Fantastic Four as well as the X-Men movies and Star Wars, tells MTV at this weekend’s Toronto Film Festival that he still wants Fantastic Four 2 to happen.
“I’m really focused on the next one,” Kinberg said.
Interestingly enough, Kinberg remarks he was on set every day for filming of Fantastic Four and the thought they made a great movie — a similar sentiment to the Tweet sent out by director Josh Trank that went viral in which Trank stated he had a fantastic version a year ago.
“You’re waking up every morning being like, I want to go make a great movie. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is,” Kinberg offered with mention they are still looking ahead at a sequel. “We’re figuring out what that movie would be. I’d like that to happen.”
Kinberg continues with mention he still has yet to fully explore why Fantastic Four bombed.
“I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else,” Kinberg said. “But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”
Kate Mara also weighs in that while she is not sure if FF 2 will happen, she wouldn’t mind returning.
“[It’s] unlikely that [a sequel] will happen, but I would love to [do one]. I would love to play Sue Storm in a movie that everybody loves. That would be great,” she said.
Currently, Fantastic Four has a worldwide gross of just over $160 million; the film is rated at 9% over at Rotten Tomatoes.
