Matthew Vaughn Wanted Young Wolverine With Tom Hardy

Matthew Vaughn Wanted Young Wolverine With Tom Hardy

It’s learned director Matthew Vaughn had an idea for a Young Wolverine movie as well as an X-Men trilogy, which his X-Men: First Class movie would have launched.

While discussing his latest movie Kingsman: The Golden Circle with Deadline, talk of his X-Men work is brought up where it’s also learned he was working on X-Men: Days of Future Past. Matthew Vaughn says he had an idea for a trilogy where a Young Wolverine movie would have followed X-Men: First Class and been set in the 1970s, with X-Men: Days of Future Past being the final chapter of the three. Matthew Vaughn also uses Tom Hardy as an example to play the Young Wolverine. Check it out:

After doing First Class, I really felt that I was playing in a sandpit that wasn’t my sandpit. It was Bryan Singer’s. Bryan wanted to direct First Class, and then we worked on the Days of Future Past screenplay.

When we finished [Days of Future Past], I remember saying to Simon Kinberg and Emma Watts; guys, this feels like it should be the third of the trilogy. It’s such a big concept. Why don’t we do another, one set in the ’70s, because of Young Wolverine, and then the third one is Days of Future Past, where you’re seeing the Young Wolverine with, let’s say it’s Tom Hardy and Hugh Jackman and all the other characters were together. For me, that’s the end of a trilogy. How do you beat that?

Obviously we all know Matthew Vaughn’s ideas never happened:

And I got told no, and when I’m in my sandpit, I don’t like hearing no if I think it’s a good idea. I adore Bryan, and I thought, you know what, I’m going to hand the baton to him. Bryan was nice enough to give me the baton to run with. And I ran with it, and didn’t fall over, and I handed it back.

I thought X-Men: First Class was probably the best X-Men film since the original 2000 movie, and Singer’s latest X-Men movies haven’t been any good, so it’s a shame that Matthew Vaughn’s ideas never came to fruition–especially Tom Hardy as a Young Wolverine! Hardy has been my pick for a while to replace Hugh Jackman, but that won’t come to be because Sony Pictures has cast Tom Hardy as their Venom.

The latest about a potential new Wolverine is that FOX Studios has said it’s a possibility.
