‘Minecraft’ Movie Tracking $60M+ Opening – But No One’s Buying Tickets?

‘Minecraft’ Movie Tracking $60M+ Opening – But No One’s Buying Tickets?

Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie is out in three weeks and tracking offers the flick will open at $60 million or more. Other estimates offer a wider range of $55M – $75M. However, ticket sales don’t seem to be up to par.

Are the trailer reactions anything to go by?

Deadline thinks the movie will do decent at the box office simply because of the popularity of the Minecraft game. However, that might not be the case if the first trailer reactions are anything to go by which actually now has 1.8 million dislikes on YouTube, even more than Disney’s Snow White.

Warner Bros. did seem to fix things in the latest trailer releases but kids I’ve talked to about the movie that play/ed the game aren’t too thrilled with the casting, particularly Jack Black as Steve. They say Jack Black looks nothing like the character. Jason Momoa is also in the movie and plays a new character, a garbage man. That first trailer seemed to mock the fan base more than anything.

Likely front-loaded

The trend as of late seems that box office openings are more on the softer side as fans wait for word of mouth. Deadline is right that Minecraft has a huge fan base so it’s likely A Minecraft Movie will be front-loaded, but if the flick isn’t any good, it will drop quickly.

It’s added that unaided awareness for A Minecraft Movie is 13, which is below The Super Mario Bros Movie‘s 20 ($146M opening) yet just above Pokémon Detective Pikachu ($54.3M opening).

Ticket sales

A Minecraft Movie also has a pretty big budget, reportedly $150 before marketing, so the flick will need to make bank. Tickets went on sale on February 27, but at least in my area, Warner Bros. might need to start crafting the excuses ASAP.

Release Info

A Minecraft Movie hits theaters and IMAX in North America on April 4, 2025, with international releases starting April 2, 2025.

Directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre), the film stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black, along with Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Hansen (Just Mercy), and Jennifer Coolidge.

The story follows four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—dealing with everyday struggles when they’re pulled into the Minecraft Overworld through a mysterious portal. This blocky world runs on imagination, and to get home, they must learn to survive and defend it from Piglins, Zombies, and other dangers. They team up with Steve (Black), an expert crafter, to complete their quest. Along the way, they’ll rediscover their creativity—the key to thriving both in Minecraft and the real world.
