Rachel Zegler Heads To Broadway As Hollywood Movie Career Stalls

Rachel Zegler’s next big move isn’t another Disney tentpole or franchise movie. It’s Broadway.

Variety reports Zegler will bring Evita to Broadway in spring 2027, starring as Argentinian first lady Eva Perón in director Jamie Lloyd’s revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical.

“Performing Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s brilliant show in London was a dream come true, but being able to partner once again with Jamie to bring Evita to Broadway is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Zegler said in a statement. “I can’t wait to perform for my home, New York City.”

Rachel Zegler Brings Evita To Broadway

Zegler previously starred in the Evita revival in London. Now the production is heading to New York.

It’s a big stage role for Zegler, and Broadway may be a strong fit for her. She can sing, she has stage experience, and Evita gives her another major spotlight.

But it also keeps the same larger trend going. Zegler’s most notable next move is not a high-profile Hollywood movie.

Hollywood Roles Look Quiet

Zegler was once positioned as one of Hollywood’s next major young stars after West Side Story.

She followed that with The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Disney’s Snow White. But after Snow White, things appear to have cooled.

IMDb lists upcoming projects for Zegler, including On Your Feet, She Gets It From Me, and Octet. However, those aren’t on the same level as Snow White or The Hunger Games.

That doesn’t mean Zegler isn’t working. She is. But right now, there doesn’t appear to be a major studio movie comeback lined up.

Snow White Backlash Got Personal

Snow White became a major headache for Disney before it even hit theaters.

The live-action remake faced backlash over Zegler’s comments about the original animated movie, the dwarf controversy, and her public comments on politics and social issues.

Zegler later said the backlash crossed into personal attacks. In a Harper’s Bazaar interview, she said, “I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for West Side Story and too much of another for Snow White.”

She also said the reaction led to safety concerns.

“If I’d been able to predict everything that would come my way, the threats to my safety, I would have just thrown my phone into the ocean,” Zegler said.

Y2K Didn’t Help

Zegler’s A24 horror comedy Y2K also failed to move the needle.

The movie opened in December 2024 and massively underperformed at the box office. It reportedly cost around $15 million and finished with only about $4.5 million worldwide.

That’s a rough result after Zegler had been attached to much bigger studio projects.

Broadway May Be The Better Lane

Evita could be a smart move for Zegler. Broadway gives her a major role, a live audience, and a chance to focus on what first made Hollywood notice her.

Still, the optics are hard to ignore.

After Snow White and Y2K, Zegler’s next major headline is Broadway in 2027, not Marvel, DC, Disney, or another big franchise.

Rachel Zegler is still working. She’s just not back at the top of Hollywood.
