Metal Gear Solid Movie Happening at Sony With Final Destination: Bloodlines Directors

Sony’s Metal Gear Solid movie is happening, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are set to direct the adaptation for Columbia Pictures as part of a new first-look deal with the studio.

The duo is coming off Final Destination: Bloodlines, which turned into both a box office hit and the best-reviewed entry in that franchise.

Sony moves forward with Metal Gear Solid movie

According to THR, Lipovsky and Stein will direct Sony’s Metal Gear Solid movie, based on the video game franchise created by Hideo Kojima. Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing.

The report also notes the project would mark the first time the blockbuster stealth-action property is brought to the big screen.

The two directors said in a statement that Metal Gear Solid was a “groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece” that changed video games and added that they are honored to bring Kojima’s characters and world to life.

Sony Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch also praised the pair as filmmakers with a strong command of visuals and suspense.

Big win for Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein

The news comes after a big year for Lipovsky and Stein. THR says Final Destination: Bloodlines grossed $317 million worldwide on a budget of around $50 million, making it the top-grossing movie in that franchise. Sony has now locked them in with an expansive first-look deal that covers all of the studio’s film labels.

They are also already working with Sony on multiple projects, including an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures Animation and the original sci-fi project The Earthling for Columbia Pictures.

What happened with the previous Metal Gear Solid movie plans?

The Metal Gear Solid movie has been in development for years. Back in 2020, Deadline and Variety reported that Oscar Isaac was attached to star as Solid Snake in a version being developed at Sony with Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached to direct.

This new update suggests Sony is taking the adaptation in a new direction with Lipovsky and Stein now in the director’s chairs.

Nothing else has been announced yet regarding casting, plot details, or a release date. Still, after years of stops and starts, this is one of the biggest signs yet that Sony is serious about finally getting Metal Gear Solid made.
