Zack Snyder Just Destroyed James Gunn's 'Lanterns'

Fans are having a field day following the release of the first trailer for the DCU Lanterns series, and now Zack Snyder himself has added fuel to the fire.

Snyder recently liked an Instagram post pointing out that his Green Lantern cut scene from Zack Snyder’s Justice League was essentially created “in his driveway,” while the new Lanterns trailer from James Gunn and HBO is getting roasted online for its dull, brown color palette.

The viral post compares Snyder’s version of the character—bright, glowing green and comic-book accurate—with the darker and more muted look seen in the Lanterns footage.

Fans quickly noticed Snyder’s like on the post, which many are interpreting as the director subtly weighing in on the ongoing debate.

Snyder has liked similar posts before

This isn’t the first time Snyder has liked posts that appear critical of the current direction of DC.

Fans have previously spotted Snyder liking posts praising Ben Affleck as the best Batman, along with posts supporting the “Restore the SnyderVerse” movement.

Another example includes Snyder liking a post praising Hans Zimmer’s Man of Steel score over the new music used in James Gunn’s Superman film. That post also pointed out how Zimmer incorporated elements inspired by the classic John Williams theme from the Christopher Reeve Superman movies.

Each time Snyder interacts with these posts, fans quickly circulate screenshots, interpreting them as subtle nods to his supporters.

The Green Lantern that almost appeared in Justice League

Snyder originally planned for John Stewart to appear in the final scene of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but was forced to switch gears and go with Martian Manhunter.

The scene, which he actually shot at his house (see below), would have featured the Green Lantern arriving to recruit Batman for the coming war against Darkseid.

Fans point out how Zack did a better job with Green Lantern while filming at his home than Gunn’s DCU did with the HBO Lanterns series. Snyder apparently agrees with the fans, judging by his liking the IG post.

According to Snyder, Warner Bros. forced him to remove Green Lantern because the studio had its own plans for the character at the time.

Those plans included a large-scale HBO Max Green Lantern series that was reportedly going to be a massive space opera with a much higher budget. It even got so far as casting Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner.

From what we have been told, the project was later scrapped after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav took over and began restructuring the company’s DC plans. Zaslav also canceled plans under Mike De Luca to bring back the DCEU and instead tapped James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot the franchise with a new DCU using cheaper talent.
