FX confirmed production on Shogun Season 2 starts in January in Vancouver. The Shogun team also revealed the full cast lineup, writing staff, and directors as the series moves ten years past the events of Season 1.
New and Returning Cast
FX added Asami Kizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis return, along with Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri.
Season 2 continues the story of Toranaga and Blackthorne ten years after their rise to power. The series picks up as their political and personal ties tighten in a Japan still shaped by the fallout of the civil war.
Where Shogun Airs
New episodes will air on FX and stream on Hulu in the U.S. International viewers will watch on Disney+. Season 1 remains on Hulu.
Writing and Directing Teams
Season 2 brings back co-creator Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who lead a writing staff that includes Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff.
Directing duties include returning Season 1 directors Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga. New directors include Anthony Byrne, Kate Herron, and Marks.
Season 1’s Emmy Run
Shogun dominated the 2024 Emmys with 18 wins, the most awards ever for a single season. Sanada became the first Japanese actor to win Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Anna Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in the same category.
What Season 2 Covers
Season 2 adapts the next chapter of James Clavell’s saga and follows Toranaga and Blackthorne as their alliance enters a new phase.
The official logline offers that Shogun Season 2 “is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.”
