Lilly Wachowski Defends Gretchen Felker-Martin, Calls Charlie Kirk ‘White Nationalist, Transphobe’

The controversy surrounding DC Comics’ cancellation of trans writer Gretchen Felker-Martin’s Red Hood series has now drawn in trans filmmaker Lilly Wachowski, co-director of The Matrix franchise, who blasted the publisher on social media.

Gretchen Felker-Martin’s Comments

Felker-Martin, who wrote the first issue of DC’s short-lived Red Hood series, sparked outrage after celebrating the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. She posted online: “Thoughts and prayers you Nazi b-tch… Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie.”

DC responded by canceling the Red Hood book after just one issue. The company told retailers that all orders for future issues were being refunded, and later said that posts promoting hostility or violence were “inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”

Felker-Martin’s Reaction to Being Fired

Speaking to The Comics Journal, Felker-Martin admitted her remarks were impulsive but said she had “no regrets.”

She also said her DC Comics career was over and insisted she would not accept future work from DC even if it were offered, stating: “I have no desire to be part of any organization that wants to pretend that people like Charlie Kirk are decent human beings who deserve respect.”

Lilly Wachowski Weighs In

Lilly Wachowski reacted to the news on Bluesky, blasting DC Comics for firing Felker-Martin, and calling Charlie Kirk a “white nationalist, transphobe”:

“DC Comics planting their flag on the moral high ground on the side of a white nationalist, transphobe while dutifully carrying on his rotten work in the firing of Gretchen Felker-Martin. The characters of the DC universe would find this despicable.”

Fallout Continues

Felker-Martin’s firing is part of a massive amount of online backlash, with other figures in gaming and entertainment — including developers at Sony’s Sucker Punch and Blizzard — also facing scrutiny for comments mocking or celebrating Kirk’s assassination.

Stephen King is also facing massive backlash, as is Dwayne Johnson’s daughter, and video game developer Bethesda.
