Transformers G.I. Joe Animated Universe Rumored From Walking Dead, Invincible Creator

A new rumor suggests Robert Kirkman is set to bring his Energon Universe comics to life as an animated series. The project is said to be a modern remake of the classic 1980s Transformers and G.I. Joe cartoons.

The rumor surfaced on Reddit, claiming that Kirkman—best known for The Walking Dead and Invincible—will announce the animated adaptation at San Diego Comic-Con later this month. If true, the new show will reimagine the iconic Hasbro franchises using Kirkman’s comic continuity, which launched last year through his Skybound imprint.

Kirkman’s Energon Universe

Kirkman and Skybound have been developing the Energon Universe as a fresh take on Transformers and G.I. Joe, introducing new origin stories and connecting the franchises in one shared world. The comic line includes Void Rivals, Transformers, Duke, and Cobra Commander, with additional series in development.

The rumor follows the recent announcement that Robert Kirkman will start writing the two-time Eisner Award-winning series Transformers with issue #25, which is set to be released in October.

The comics have received strong fan and critical support for balancing nostalgia with a modern, character-driven approach. Kirkman’s involvement has also added credibility, as his work on Invincible showed how an animated adaptation can expand a comic book property.

No Official Word Yet

As of now, neither Kirkman nor Skybound has confirmed the animated series. However, with Comic-Con taking place July 25–28, it wouldn’t be surprising if a major announcement drops during one of Skybound’s panels.

What About the Live-Action Transformers and G.I. Joe?

While the animated Energon Universe is rumored to be in the works, the live-action franchises are also making headlines. As previously reported, a new Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie is said to still be in development at Paramount, with rumors suggesting Michael Bay could return as director, with five total projects claimed to be in development.

The next live-action Transformers film is expected to continue the storyline from Rise of the Beasts, which teased a shared universe between the Autobots and G.I. Joe. No official release date has been announced, but the project has been said to be a major priority for Hasbro and Paramount.

It’s expected announcements will happen once the Paramount and Skydance merger is finalized.
