Confirming the rumors, Marvel Studios announced at Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. is playing Doctor Doom in two Avengers movies.
The announcement also confirmed the Russo Brothers are returning to direct the two Avengers films, along with Stephen McFeely who returns as the writer.
Avengers 5 is now titled Avengers: Doomsday, with Avengers 6 remaining as Avengers: Secret Wars.
The Avengers: Doomsday logo was also revealed, with the movie getting released on May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars gets released May 7, 2027.
Additional details include it was also announced at Comic-Con that the Fantastic Four will be appearing in both the movies. The FF’s own film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, gets released July 25, 2025 and just started filming.
Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark and Iron Man for ten MCU films and kicked things off back in 2008 with Iron Man. Joe and Anthony Russo directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Joe and Anthony Russo told the crowd in Hall H at Comic-Con that they jumped at the chance to direct Secret Wars, calling it “the biggest story that Marvel Comics ever told” and the reason they first “fell in love with comics.”
The Russos added that there is “one very, very important character that is required to do Secret Wars justice.” A group of green cloaked figures took the stage all wearing Doctor Doom masks. One of them then stepped forward revealing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
“New mask, same task,” Downey said with a wink. “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.”
