Ethan Van Sciver Defends James Gunn’s ‘Lanterns’

Ethan Van Sciver is adding more fuel to the Lanterns talk after reacting to a new report about the HBO series’ villain.

Van Sciver posted on X, “Oh hell yeah. I just spoiled the entire LANTERNS show,” in response to an article about the series’ secret main villain.

Van Sciver’s earlier comments claimed that Thaal Sinestro appears in every episode of the upcoming show.

Van Sciver may have confirmed more than intended

Van Sciver had already raised eyebrows when he previously said, “Sinestro is in every single episode of this show BTW,” while also arguing that DC Studios was deliberately holding back major Green Lantern material from the teaser.

Now, with Van Sciver joking that he “spoiled the entire LANTERNS show,” fans are taking it as him basically admitting he may have let a major detail slip before DC and HBO were ready to reveal it.

Sinestro could be main villain

Sinestro is the likely hidden main villain of Lanterns, pointing to Van Sciver’s earlier post and the previously revealed casting of Ulrich Thomsen in the role.

Thomsen’s casting has been out there for a while, and the marketing has kept Sinestro mostly under wraps.

That lines up with Van Sciver’s earlier defense of the show, where he said there is a reason Sinestro was not shown in the footage and that the studio is “holding their fire.”

Why this matters for Lanterns

If Sinestro really is woven through all eight episodes, that says Lanterns is playing a longer game than the first teaser let on.

The trailer sold the series as a grounded mystery with Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder in the American heartland, while official HBO Max materials say the show premieres later this August.

Van Sciver had also previously suggested the title Lanterns instead of Green Lanterns hints that more of the emotional spectrum could be in play, not just the Green Lantern Corps.

Van Sciver had already been defending the series

What made Van Sciver’s earlier comments stand out is that he wasn’t trashing the series.

He actually praised the teaser, said the cast looked solid, and argued the show was being approached as an adult drama-mystery first and a superhero story second.

So this latest post reads less like a leak campaign and more like Van Sciver realizing after the fact that he may have said too much.

Van Sciver also happens to be vested in Green Lantern as he gets royalties for creating certain DC characters, including Atrocitus, who also happens to be rumored for the show. And he also co-created Green Lantern Jessica Cruz.

Release

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with Ulrich Thomsen previously reported to be playing Sinestro. The HBO and DC Studios series is set to debut later in August 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
