Wonder Woman Owns The Mummy

Good news for fans of the DCEU, and bad news for any fans of the upcoming Dark Universe, as it’s being said Wonder Woman will take the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row in the U.S.–topping Universal’s debut of The Mummy and the start of their own monster cinematic universe.

The success of last week’s Wonder Woman has actually seen estimates for The Mummy drop as THR reports The Mummy‘s opening weekend has been downgraded from $38 million last week to $35 million on Monday following Wonder Woman scoring over $100 million for its debut.

It is noted The Mummy is expected to do pretty well overseas where Tom Cruise is still pretty huge.

Regarding Wonder Woman‘s week two, it’s thought Wonder Woman may only drop around 50% in the U.S. and bring in around $50 million. Wonder Woman is a good movie, and I think it has legs, so the film should end up with a higher than expected worldwide box office gross (possibly now around $700 million or more).

As noted in the article, The Mummy is seen by U.S. audiences as “just another” reboot, so the hype doesn’t seem to be as high domestically, but I still think it looks pretty interesting as it does star Tom Cruise and is the start of Universal’s Dark Universe cinematic monsterverse. The reviews for The Mummy are due out tomorrow, I believe.

The Mummy opens Thursday night with advance screenings.
