What is Civil War about?

The plot hasn’t officially been released but the film is described as chronicling a race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.

“19 states have seceded. The United States Army ramps up activity. The White House issued warnings to the Western Forces as well as the Florida Alliance. The three-term president assures the uprising will be dealt with swiftly,” starts the trailer.

The trailer reveals that nineteen states have declared secession, causing a heightened response from the U.S. army. There’s talk of the “Western Forces” in California and Texas, as well as the “Florida Alliance.” Nick Offerman plays the President who vows swift action against the uprising. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst seems to be leading a group of journalists trying to gain access to the U.S. Capitol.

A scene also features a standoff between Wagner Moura’s character, who is unarmed, a character played Jesse Plemons, who is armed and might be a member of one of the aforementioned forces or alliance.

“There’s been a misunderstanding, we are American,” says Moura’s character. Plemons takes it in and questions, “Ok, what kind of American are you?”

The film also stars Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Cailee Spaeny, with Nick Offerman playing the president of the United States.

Civil War is in theaters on April 12, 2024, also including IMAX theaters.
