The Flash Earth-2 Easter Eggs

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24250:]]

Spoilers follow for tonight’s episode of The Flash, “Welcome To Earth-2.”

Update: Watch the portal Easter Egg scene in 4K Ultra HD.

Following last episode where Wells revealed he was helping Zoom steal Barry’s powers, Team Flash decides to help Wells by heading to Earth-2 to save his daughter.

Tonight’s episode is filled with a bunch of Easter Eggs and references to DC Comics characters.

Here are a few I spotted:

When Barry, Cisco and Wells go through the portal, three teasers are shown with what looks to be a Green Arrow (future version that is appearing in DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow? or Connor Hawke?); the CBS Supergirl series starring Melissa Benoist (note: The Flash is crossing over in an episode of Supergirl in March), and the 90s John Wesley Shipp Flash (plays Barry’s father in the series). Update: Better pics from the portal are included at the end of the article (and you can watch the scene here).

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24248:]]

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24249:]]

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24246:]]

The Justice League mural in the CCPD is replaced by a Justice Society reference with “A Free & Just Society”:

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24251:]]

Another cool Easter Egg is featured in the home of Iris and Bart Allen (yes, the Earth-2 “Barry” is actually named Bartholomew and they are married). The Earth-2 Barry’s mother never died, and the episode saw our Barry call his Earth-2 mother, with the phone having on speed dial: His Dad; his mom and dad (mother get remarried?); Eddie (Thawne?); Bruce (Wayne? – Batman); Hal (Jordan? – Green Lantern); Diana (Prince? – Wonder Woman). The phone conversation also saw a reference to Atlantis (home of Aquaman).

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24245:]]

Other Earth-2 Easter Eggs and references:

Henry Hewitt (Demore Barnes) works for Wells/Star Labs (aka villain Tokomak).

The mayor of Earth-2 Central City is Mayor Leonard Snart (Captain Cold).

Detective West is Iris West.

Floyd Lawton is Iris’ partner (Suicide Squad’s Deadshot).

Joe West is a singer (and can sing in real life).

Caitlyn is Killer Frost.

Robbie Amell is Deathstorm.

Evil Cisco is known as Reverb and has more powers.

I think they closed the portal location that sent Grodd to Earth-2.

I didn’t spot them, but Jonah Hex and a Legion ring are also said to be referenced (update: see below).

Did I miss any?

Now both Jughead and Betty have been cast.

Cole Sprouse, known for Disney’s Zack and Cody, will play Jughead, with the character described as a heartthrob with a philosophical bent and former best friend of Archie Andrews.

Surviving Jack‘s Lili Reinhart is playing Betty, described as: sweet, studious, eager-to-please and wholesome, with a huge crush on her longtime best friend, Archie.

The rest of the Riverdale characters have yet to be cast.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24242:]]

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24243:]]

Riverdale will be written by Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and produced by Warner Brothers Studios and Berlanti Productions. The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. Bryan Fuller Serving As Showrunner on New Star Trek TV Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24229:]]

BRYAN FULLER SET AS CO-CREATOR AND SHOWRUNNER OF THE NEW “STAR TREK” TELEVISION SERIES ALONGSIDE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ALEX KURTZMAN

Writer-Producer Boldly Returns to the Franchise That Launched His Career In the CBS Television Studios-Produced Series Which Will be Distributed in the U.S. on CBS All Access

Bryan Fuller, who launched his career writing for “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Voyager,” will return to the television franchise as co-creator and executive producer of the new CBS “Star Trek” series.

As previously announced, the new series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in early 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. The new “Star Trek” series marks the first original series developed for CBS All Access.

The next chapter of the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire,” said executive producer Bryan Fuller. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

“Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “His encyclopedic knowledge of ‘Trek’ canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

“For the past 50 years, ‘Star Trek’ has been a groundbreaking franchise that not only changed the landscape of television, but made a significant impact on pop culture,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “When we began discussions about the series returning to television, we immediately knew that Bryan Fuller would be the ideal person to work alongside Alex Kurtzman to create a fresh and authentic take on this classic and timeless series. Bryan is not only an extremely gifted writer, but a genuine fan of ‘Star Trek.’ Having someone at the helm with his gravitas who also understands and appreciates the significance of the franchise and the worldwide fan base was essential to us.”

Recently, Fuller served as executive producer and writer on NBC’s “Hannibal,” based on the characters from the book Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. He got his start writing “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” followed by “Star Trek: Voyager,” where he worked his way from freelance writer to staff writer to co-producer. Fuller went on to create the critically acclaimed series “Dead Like Me” and “Wonderfalls.” Also, he served as writer and co-executive producer on the first season of “Heroes,” before leaving to create the Emmy Award-winning “Pushing Daisies.” Fuller is currently executive producing along with partner Michael Green an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods for the STARZ network.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of “Star Trek,” one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time. The original “Star Trek,” created by Gene Roddenberry, spawned a dozen feature films and five successful television series. Half a century later, the “Star Trek” television series are licensed on a variety of different platforms in more than 190 countries, and the franchise still generates more than 1 billion social media impressions every month.

“Star Trek” will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman, Fuller and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers.

CBS All Access is the CBS Television Network’s digital subscription video on-demand and live streaming service. CBS All Access gives CBS fans the ability to watch more than 7,500 episodes on demand – spanning current shows from primetime, daytime and late night, as well as past seasons of select series and classic TV hits, including every episode of all previous STAR TREK television series. CBS All Access is currently available online at CBS.com, on mobile devices via the CBS App for iOS, Android and Windows 10, and on Roku Players, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV, Xbox 360 and Fire TV. To sign up, visit http://www.cbs.com/allaccess.

CBS Television Studios is one of the industry’s leading suppliers of primetime programming for broadcast, basic and premium cable. The studio’s roster of programs includes the phenomenally successful NCIS and CSI franchises; the critically acclaimed series THE GOOD WIFE, MADAM SECRETARY, JANE THE VIRGIN and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND; the hit crime dramas ELEMENTARY, BLUE BLOODS and HAWAII FIVE-0; the summer event series ZOO and the upcoming new dramas BRAINDEAD and AMERICAN GOTHIC; the Emmy Award-nominated daytime talk show THE TALK; and the new late night talk shows THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT and THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN; and the highly anticipated new “Star Trek” series for CBS All Access.

TV Fan Blasts Marc Guggenheim “Over Slap To The Face” Because Of Suicide Squad Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24214:]]

I always love when I hear executives state the movies don’t affect the comics or TV universes.

Case in point: Current Marvel Comics EIC Axel Alonso regularly states the movies don’t affect the comics. We know that isn’t true as Matt Fraction stated the Thor movie interfered with how he wrote his Thor comic; we know Abnett and Lanning were kicked off their Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova comics because of Gunn’s film; we know the Inhumans are replacing the X-Men, and we know Marvel Comics cancelled the Fantastic Four because of the Fox movie. We also know the last ten or so years has seen Marvel Comics focus on the Avengers, and not the X-Men. And Steve Roger is returning as Captain America.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24220:]]

Regarding the DC Comics, legendary creator George Perez was pretty clear when he stated the Man of Steel people messed with his New 52 Superman comic, which is why he left.

And we also know the same happens with the DC TV universe.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24223:]]

Because of the Suicide Squad movie, Deadshot is “off the table,” Harley Quinn was shelved, and with the recent death of Amanda Waller in Arrow, it’s easy to guess the same thing happened with her character. Batman and Superman are also off limits for the Flash and Arrow universe, and Arrow couldn’t use Blue Beetle, so they went with Atom instead. Now it’s learned Deadstroke is also shelved (see below).

We can also speculate as a result of the new Green Lantern Corps movie, that now Green Lantern is also off limits.

There has been some online chatter amongst fans asking why this is the case — as the DC execs regularly state the movie and TV universes are separate. Zack Snyder recently said more of the same. So why then can’t they have the same characters? If I had to guess, my answer as to why the TV characters are being shelved is not to compete with their movie counterparts. We can probably thank Grant Gustin’s Flash for that. I’ve said it before, I think DC has finally found their “Spider-Man” with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen and The Flash. The series is popular amongst casual fans, young fans, hard core fans and older fans (WB really needs to start heavily promoting Gustin and the series). I think WB is going to find it difficult to sell the Ezra Miller Flash to the fanbase. We see they have already started spinning that we should accept Miller because there are different universes. Ezra Miller has probably been coached on the topic as in interviews he’s mentioned multiple realities/universes/dimensions. The controversy has even caused Grant Gustin to come out and tell fans that he supports Miller.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24218:]]

Now executive producer Marc Guggenheim is feeling the heat as fans asked and complained on Tumblr about the TV characters getting the axe, specifically the Arrow Suicide Squad characters with Deadshot, Deathstroke and Amanda Waller.

Fan #1: Any possible chance of either Slade or Walter returning throughout the rest of Season 4? #Arrow

MG: The character of Slade Wilson is currently tied up in another DC project.  Walter is more likely.

Fan #2: You said that only Deadshot was off-limits, and Amanda Waller & Deathstroke are safe. But you guys killed Waller off just like that, and she doesn’t seem like she will ever return(Because bullet to head). Who’s next to be killed off? Katana? Once Deathstroke arrives in the DC movie, will he be also killed off too? This is really frustrating, that all awesome characters are being written off, because of the Suicide Squad movie, and is a slap to the face of Arrow fans.

MG: Um… I never said that.

Arrow‘s Stephen Amell, who may just be as frustrated as a lot of fans are (Amell has been vocal about wanting to be in Justice League with Gustin as the movie Flash), recently stated in an interview he thinks Arrow is missing Deathstroke.

“Manu [Bennett] is a character, and Manu played a great character. And I really honestly think that Arrow has been missing something since he hasn’t been around. I really do. He was a transformative villain. I would really love it if Deathstroke could keep being a part of the Arrow universe,” Amell said.

Sorry to say, Stephen, per Guggenheim’s words, that isn’t going to be the case. Let’s just hope Green Arrow doesn’t appear in the DCCU any time soon, eh?

Watch The Doctor Who Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer

One of my favorite shows meets one of my… well, just average-liked movies.

Check out a Doctor Who fan-trailer above done in the style of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The video features the soundtrack from Star Wars: The Force Awakens coupled with footage from the recent Doctor Who series 1 season with Christopher Eccleston.

And if you happen to have Netflix or Hulu, you may have found that past seasons of Doctor Who have been yanked. It’s speculated the BBC may be launching their own digital streaming service in the near future. In the meantime, you can watch episodes of Doctor Who on the BBC website or by purchasing them through Amazon, iTunes or Google Play.

Fox Casts Legion TV Series Actors

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:24139:]]

Casting news for the upcoming Legion TV series has become known with Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens set to play David Haller.

In addition, Deadline reports Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) will play David’s friend Lenny, who despite a life of drugs and alcohol abuse, knows that any day now her life is gonna turn around, which gives her the likeable energy of the impossible optimist despite her rough demeanor.

Jean Smart (Designing Women) is playing Melanie, a nurturing, demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. Keller plays the self-sufficient and street-smart Syd, who uses her sharp and prickly demeanor to protect her soft core, because even though it makes her a sucker and puts her at risk, she still believes in happily ever after.

Rachel Keller (Fargo) is said to play the female lead, described as a scrappy, optimistic woman in her 20s. Details about her potential powers and specific role are unclear.

The plot of Legion is described as:

Legion introduces the story of David Haller (Stevens), based on the Marvel comics character Legion, the son of X-Men founder Charles Xavier. Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, he has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. A haunted man, David is getting tired of finding his way back to sanity and is about to give up when he meets the girl of his dreams, a fellow patient. After the strange encounter, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

It’s also previously been said the Legion TV series will not be a part of the X-Men movie universe.

Fargo‘s Noah Hawley wrote the pilot and serves as an executive producer along with X-Men’s Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg; Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb is also on board as an EP as is Jim Chory and John Cameron.
