Original Director Terry Gilliam Says SyFy 12 Monkeys TV Series Is Dumb

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:10668:]]

SyFy recently announced a television series adaptation for the 1995 12 Monkeys feature film which starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.

A series pilot has been ordered with the cast to be announced with the new TV series coming to us from producer Charles Roven, known for The Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel.

While SyFy named Terry Gilliam, director of the original 12 Monkeys movie, in their official press release, it turns out they never mentioned a thing to him.

Maybe because he thinks it’s a dumb idea.

Gilliam told ScreenDaily he is not involved with the 12 Monkeys TV series and offered some choice words.

“I know nothing about that. That’s just ridiculous,” Gilliam said. “It doesn’t have anything to do with me and no-one has contacted me.”

“It’s a very dumb idea. That’s what I think,” he continued. “If it was going to be any good it would have to be written by David and Janet Peoples, who wrote the film, otherwise it would just be another version of Time Bandits…”

Gilliam finished with a thought about his original 12 Monkeys flick.

“The script was just wonderful and the cast turned out to be just brilliant – and I didn’t fuck it up too badly,” he said.

Writers on the 12 Monkeys TV pilot are Star Trek Enterprise and Terra Nova writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.

Charles Roven (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel) and Richard Suckle submitted the new 12 Monkeys pitch with it said there looks to be a 90 minute pilot picked up followed by the regular series, similar to what SyFy did for the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica.

The 12 Monkeys SyFy TV series also has a pair of writers attached with Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) as well as a director with Jon Cassar, known for 24.

“We have a great pilot, we’re now flushing out what the rest of the series might be,” Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern said.

The original 1995 12 Monkeys, a sci-fi film directed by Terry Gilliam, saw convicted criminal James Cole (Bruce Willis) sent back in time from the year 2035 looking for a cure for a virus. His mission is to collect an original strain of a virus that forced the denizens of the year 1995 underground, which was unleashed by the terrorist group the 12 Monkeys. As Cole is sent back he is placed in a mental institute where he meets Brad Pitt’s character Jeffrey Goines.

The movie had a budget of around $30 million and brought in over five times that with $168 million leading to an Academy Award nomination for Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor.

Assuming SyFy picks up the 12 Monkeys television adaptation, it would join a slate of fresh new shows from popular and well-known creators such as Ron Moore’s Helix,  Bryan Fuller’s High Moon and M. Night Shyamalan’s Proof.
