A new Super Mario Bros. movie is in the works!
The WSJ reports Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind theĀ Despicable MeĀ movies,Ā are developing a new Mario animated film for the big screen.
The report states the two companies have been in negotiations for a year, which also includes Universal Pictures (as Universal funds and distributes Illuminationās movies). The deal came together partly because of Nintendo and Universalās partnership for theme parks, with it noted itās currently a one-picture deal with the potential for additional movies.
A live-actionĀ Super Mario Bros. was made back in 1993 starringĀ Bob Hoskins as Mario andĀ ohn Leguizamo asĀ Luigi Mario with Dennis Hopper playingĀ King Koopa. A TV series also aired in 1989 starringĀ Lou Albano as Mario.
The new Super Mario Bros. animated movie has not release date as of yet and is said to be in early development.
