Super Mario Bros. Movie In The Works

Super Mario Bros. Movie In The Works

A new Super Mario Bros. movie is in the works!

The WSJ reports Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the Despicable Me movies, are developing a new Mario animated film for the big screen.

The report states the two companies have been in negotiations for a year, which also includes Universal Pictures (as Universal funds and distributes Illumination’s movies). The deal came together partly because of Nintendo and Universal’s partnership for theme parks, with it noted it’s currently a one-picture deal with the potential for additional movies.

A live-action Super Mario Bros. was made back in 1993 starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and ohn Leguizamo as Luigi Mario with Dennis Hopper playing King Koopa. A TV series also aired in 1989 starring Lou Albano as Mario.

The new Super Mario Bros. animated movie has not release date as of yet and is said to be in early development.
