Paramount is moving forward with a new Star Trek movie that has Andor director Toby Haynes attached to helm the flick, with Seth Grahame-Smith on board as the writer, and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot producing.
Toby Haynes is also known for Utopia, Black Mirror, Sherlock, and Doctor Who, while Seth Grahame-Smith is known for The LEGO Batman movie, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Dark Shadows.
What is the new Star Trek movie about?
The new Star Trek movie is an origin story that takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise.
Deadline also adds the final chapter in that main Abrams series, Star Trek 4, remains in active development.
Movies on backburner
The last Star Trek movie was released in 2016 with Star Trek Beyond; however, it didn’t do all that well at the box office compared to its predecessor, Into Darkness.
A fourth movie was in development set to star Chris Hemsworth, who plays Kirk’s father, but the movie never went anywhere. Quentin Tarantino also wanted to do an R-rated Star Trek, but that too, never saw the light of day.
Strong on the Paramount+ streaming service
While the film side of things has been placed on the backburner, Star Trek has been strong on the Paramount+ streaming service.
Shows include Lower Decks, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: Picard with Season 3 saw lots of critical and fan acclaim.
