New Spider-Man Director Jon Watts Talks Tom Holland & More

[page_title]

The new writers of Spider-Man previously dropped some details on the direction they are taking the character, and now we hear from new director Jon Watts.

Watts will be helming the standalone Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland which bows in 2017.

“He can be a real high school student,” Watts said of Holland to EW.com. “That’s why people love Spider-Man. He’s the most grounded, relatable of superheroes. And Tom can really do that. He captures that. And he can do a standing back-flip. He’s perfect.”

Watts also talks about the Spider-Man connection to the rest of the Marvel Universe, which is a first for both Sony and Marvel.

“It’s a big universe, so everyone sort of works with each other to make sure that there’s continuity and that it all fits together,” Watts said. “It’s really exciting actually. We’re just getting started, working on the script and all that, but it’s going to be a great process.”

The untitled Spider-Man movie has a July 28, 2017 release with the script being written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Holland is expected to first appear in Captain America: Civil War, and Marisa Tomei is rumored to be playing Aunt May.
