A new Karate Kid movie is in the works from Sony that will team Jackie Chan with Ralph Macchio.
Macchio of course starred in the original movies and the hugely successful Netflix Cobra Kai series, with Chan in the remake.
According to the info, Ralph Macchio will be back as Daniel LaRusso, with Jackie Chan back as Mr. Han, who played the Kung Fu master in the 2010 movie starring Jaden Smith.
Deadline states the details of the plot of the film are under wraps, but their sources say the film will mark a continuation of the mythology of the original franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle is directing from a script by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt producing.
Update: The story is said to “bring the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor” (via THR).
It also said they are having an open casting call for the lead and are looking for someone who is Chinese or mixed-race Chinese who has a Martial Arts, fighting and/or dance background, no acting experience required, and age 15-17 (karatekidcasting.com).

Is Cobra Kai involved?
Now the big question is whether or not it will tie into the Netflix Cobra Kai series which is on its sixth and final season. Deadline doesn’t mention anything but in September of 2022 is when news of the new Karate Kid movie became known.
At the time, Cobra Kai showrunner Jon Hurwitz said they are not involved.
“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well,” tweeted Hurwitz.
Hopefully, things have changed as it seems to be a massive mistake not to include the team behind Cobra Kai in some form.
It’s also unknown if any of the cast from Cobra Kai will be appearing in the new Karate Kid movie such as William Zabka, Xolo Maridueña, or members of Daniel LaRusso’s family.
Update #2: With mention the movie takes place on the East Coast, it seems unlikely Cobra Kai will be involved which is set in California.
