Universal Pictures has released four new images from Jurassic World Rebirth, a film director Gareth Edwards explains feels like a new trilogy and compares to Jaws, the classic movie from Steven Spielberg.
Love letter to the legendary filmmaker
Speaking with EW.com, Edwards says it’s a giant love letter to the legendary filmmaker:
“I can’t speak for Universal, but it did feel like a new trilogy, in a way. I’m not sure what their plans are, but it felt like the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this franchise. To me, it’s a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films. There are moments in this movie that remind me very much of Jaws. It’s like little greatest hits of all those aspects of his films that I loved growing up as a child. It’s essentially a little adventure odyssey across this island, a survival story, really.”
Scarlett Johansson plays a skilled covert operations expert
Per the film’s official synopsis, Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.
Mahershala Ali has a sibling-like bond with Johansson’s character
Mahershala Ali plays Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader, whom Edwards describes as the “Ahab of our movie.”
Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. “He’s out of his depth in terms of the military element of the mission,” reveals Edwards.
Emmy nominee Rupert Friend appears as representative of Big Pharma, Martin Krebs. “Rupert’s got a little bit of James Bond about him,” said Edwards.
Face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery
So what happens in the the story is that Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades. Edwards teases:
“Obviously, it all goes wrong and becomes a situation that you enjoy watching as a Jurassic fan. Once you’re on the adventure, the film doesn’t let go until the end credits. The enjoyment of it is in the moment-to-moment chase, escape, scare, horror, curve balls in the whole plotting of the set pieces and the dinosaur moments.”
Jurassic World Rebirth gets released July 2, 2025. Also starring includes Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise,David Iacono,Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvainm and Ed Skrein. The screenplay is from original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp based on characters created by Michael Crichton.
