James Gunn's Controversial Tim Burton Batman Comments Resurface

James Gunn’s comments and thoughts on the Tim Burton Batman movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson have resurfaced online and are causing lots of controversy among fans as are his thoughts on the Christopher Nolan films.

Suffice it to say, that Gunn’s comments are not kind, which has seen Gunn delete them.

Fans apparently found the comments on James Gunn’s Facebook page which were posted over a decade ago and have re-posted them to Twitter and Reddit, with “James Gunn” and “#firejamesgunn” again trending on Twitter.

As James Gunn is now in charge of the DCU, and developing Superman: Legacy and his own version of Batman with The Brave and the Bold, in addition to Michael Keaton returning in The Flash, some fans aren’t happy and are worried.

Batman is a “ridiculous, awful film”

“The Tim Burton Batman is poorly written, the soundtrack is the worst work of everyone involved, and it is absolutely one of the most boring films ever,” said Gunn.

Gunn continued, “Not only that, but the reveal of the Joker as the killer of Bruce Wayne’s parents spits in the face of Batman’s origin, and is a nullification of the bottomless thirst for vengeance that necessarily drives Batman. It pretends not to be campy, but is completely so. And, on top of everything, the dark creature of the night can’t even move his fucking neck. Give me a fucking break. It’s a ridiculous, awful film. Burton’s Planet of the Apes is genius in comparison.”

James Gunn didn’t like the Jack Nicholson Joker

“Oh yeah, and Jack Nicholson as the Joker is Jack Nicholson in the shining with shitty clown makeup. Fuck you, everyone involved with that travesty,” said Gunn.

Gunn did say he liked the sequel better

“I think Batman Returns is messy but a much more fun (and better) film,” said Gunn.

James Gunn likes Batman & Robin better

James Gunn even went so far as to say the Joel Schumacher Batman & Robin starring George Clooney is better than the Tim Burton Batman movie (which is pretty funny as it has been said Gunn brought Clooney back for the end of The Flash movie).

“Batman & Robin is better than the original Tim Burton Batman. Not an opinion. A fact. (And I’m not saying Batman & Robin doesn’t suck),” said Gunn.

Again, James Gunn is developing his own version of the Dark Knight, so he’ll get his chance to do Batman right. Let’s wait and see how the fans react.

James Gunn has problems with Christopher Nolan’s Batman

Update: James Gunn also didn’t like Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, as responding to a comment in the Facebook thread, Gunn said the following.

“@Shawn – A) Keaton DID have a ridiculous voice. That said, I’d rather put up with a ridiculous voice than with horrible action sequences and acting barely worthy of the Batman TV show,” replied Gunn at the time.

Gunn added, “B) I have no idea how you can think that the Burton Batman has more similarities with Moore or Miller’s Batman (and Joker) than Nolan’s does. And, listen, I have problems with both of Nolan’s films – I don’t think either one is classic, and I don’t even really think Batman Begins is good. But they’re far superior to the first Batman.”

Gunn also said, “C) None of your defenses get by the fact that, despite being the first cinematic dark take on Batman (so what? Stallone’s Judge Dredd was the first dark take on Judge Dredd), the movie is awful.”
