The original Highlander is headed back to theaters for its 40th Anniversary, and fans are also getting a new poster along with the official trailer restored in 4K.
To mark the milestone, Highlander returns to cinemas on May 4. A new collector’s edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray release will also follow on June 29.
Released on March 7, 1986, Highlander was directed by Russell Mulcahy and has gone on to become a cult favorite thanks to its mix of fantasy, action, and sword-fighting mythology.

Highlander returns to theaters for 40th Anniversary
The anniversary re-release gives fans a chance to see Highlander back on the big screen where it belongs.
The film follows Connor MacLeod, a Scottish swordsman born in 1518 who discovers he is one of the immortals, a race of warriors who can only die if they are decapitated. Their battles stretch across centuries and lead to the Gathering, where the surviving immortals face off for the Prize.
Connor wants no part of the bloodshed, but he cannot escape his fate. That puts him on a collision course with the Kurgan, the brutal enemy who seeks a power beyond imagination.
The story moves from the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century to present-day New York, blending fantasy, history, and action in a way that helped make the movie stand out.

New poster and restored 4K trailer released
Along with the theatrical return, a new 40th Anniversary poster has been released, and the official trailer has been restored in 4K.
The new art leans into the movie’s fantasy tone and iconic imagery, highlighting Connor MacLeod, Sean Connery’s Ramirez, and the sword-heavy mythology that made Highlander a fan favorite.
The restored trailer also gives longtime fans a cleaner look at the cult classic while introducing the film to a new audience ahead of the theatrical return and home release.
