Thanos Main Character In Avengers: Infinity War

Thanos Main Character In Avengers: Infinity War

The Mad Titan Thanos will make his presence felt in the upcoming Marvel Studios Avengers: Infinity War movies.

Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of the Avengers 3 and Avengers 4, recently spoke with CNet and offered up Thanos is basically a main character of the movies.

With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, [and] that brought some inspiration.

As noted, the Avengers: Infinity War is described to be inspired by “heist-style” movies, which is due to Thanos seeking out the Infinity Stones, the six artifacts that when assembled together give the holder ultimate power.

The six stones consist of:

  • Tesseract (Space Stone)
  • Aether (Reality Stone)
  • Orb (Power Stone)
  • Loki’s Scepter / Vision (Mind Stone)
  • Doctor Strange’s  Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone)
  • Soul Stone.. to be identified.

Josh Brolin is playing Thanos in the films and previously dropped specific details about Thanos and the Infinity Stones.

“Every one represents a power. A massive power. And all of them together, the ultimate power. There’s a few in [The Avengers: Infinity War trailer], and he’s always pining to get another one in there. So ultimately, we we don’t know. I haven’t done the second movie, so I don’t know. I literally don’t know what the second script [for Avengers 4] is. I don’t know if they finished the second script. That’s the truth. I don’t know. I think that they are in the midst of structuring  and restructuring.”

Avengers Infinity War

The Avengers: Infinity War hits May 4, 2018; the untitled Avengers 4 has a May 3, 2019 release.

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.

Good news for fans of Marvel villains as it's learned the big bad of The Avengers: Infinity War will be front and center.

Marvel Studios doesn't have the best track record when it comes to their villains as, aside from Loki, they are all pretty much one-sided and rather bland.

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige addressed the villains criticism by mentioning Thanos will be treated like a main character in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War (via Screen Rant).

“Well, I mean, it always varies, but it always starts with what serves the story the most and what serves the hero the most. We’ve been criticized, if a big criticism of ours is that we focus on the heroes more than the villains, I think that’s probably true. I don’t think it will always be true and I think some of you spoke to Chris and Steve at the Civil War junket. When the heck was that, yesterday? Last week? And they talked about, in appropriately oblique terms, Thanos. Thanos in Infinity War is, you know, in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a, that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”

So according to Kevin Feige's statement, we can expect to see a lot from Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War as the Mad Titan needs to hunt down the Infinity Stones to form the Infinity Gauntlet. It's possible a majority of Avengers: Infinity War could focus on Thanos' quest for the Infinity Stones, with possibly the untitled Avengers 4 featuring the Avengers assembling against Thanos in the final battle.

Five of the six Infinity Stones are known with:

Tesseract / Space Stone (Captain America: The First Avenger)

Aether / Reality Stone (Thor: The Dark World)

Orb / Power Stone (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Scepter / Mind Stone (Loki's Staff/Avengers)

Eye of Agamotto / Time Stone (Doctor Strange)

Soul Stone / unknown

There is also a theory that the locations of the Infinity Stones spell out THANOS:

"The Avengers: Infinity War" has a May 4, 2018 release starring Josh Brolin as Thanos. Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce the cast, but the following are thought/confirmed to be a part of the movie: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Tom Holland and Brie Larson.
