Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’ Gets A Director

Marvel Studios’ first Asian superhero movie Shang-Chi now has a director with Destin Daniel Cretton, who is directing Just Mercy, a film he wrote that happens to star Captain Marvel‘s Brie Larson and Black Panther‘s Michael B. Jordan.

Destin Cretton is also known for The Glass Castle, which also stars Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.

Chinese-American writer Dave Callaham has been said to be writing the Shang-Chi script, which Deadline says “will modernize the hero to avoid stereotypes that many comic characters of that era were saddled with.” Callaham also wrote Wonder Woman 1984, and is writing Zombieland: Double Tap, The Expendables 4, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and a new Mortal Kombat.

Marvel Shang-Chi

In the comics, Shang-Chi was created by Thanos-creator Jim Starlin and Steve Englehart back in 1973 and is known as the Master of Kung Fu. His father is the villain Fu Manchu, with his mother, a white American woman who was genetically selected by his father. Recently saw the character recruited by Captain America and Iron Man to join the Avengers. Shang-Chi’s powers include the ability to use his Chi to near superhuman levels that enable him to avoid bullets and he has also been exposed to cosmic radiation that gave him the ability to create an unlimited number of duplicates of himself.
