Plot details are learned for The Conjuring 3, which is in development and is a sequel to the previous two highly successful films as it is learned the third film will follow a man on trial who claims he was possessed by a demon.
The info comes from producer and director of the first two films, James Wan.
âItâs this guy who was on trial for committing a murder,â Wan confirms. âI think itâs the first time in Americaâs history where the defendant used possessions as a reason, as an excuse.â
Wan notes all the Conjuring movies are based on the real life works of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
âAll the Conjuring films are based on the case files, so theyâre more based on the true story aspect of the real-life Warrens. I think thatâs important,â Wan said .âItâs important that the mothership stays true to the inspiration of the real people. The spinoffs are where we get to have more fun and do weird and wonderful crazy things. The mothership of it being the Conjuring films, we want it to come back to the real stuff.â

Checking the Warrenâs real case files reveals The Conjuring 3 looks to adapt the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, which is the first known U.S. case to use the âthe devil made me do itâ defense. Without getting into too many spoilers, a 19-year-old stabs his landlord and uses possession as a defense, with the Warrenâs called on to testify on his behalf.
âWhile Ed interviewed the boy, I saw a black, misty form next to him, which told me we were dealing with something of a negative nature,â Lorraine Warren told People magazine back in 1981. âSoon the child was complaining that invisible hands were choking himâand there were red marks on him. He said that he had the feeling of being hit.â
The Conjuring 3 is being directed by Michael Chaves who has The Curse of La Llorona coming out April 19 (watch the trailer above).
