New 1987 RoboCop Sequel In The Works

Much like the new Terminator movie in development from James Cameron that will be dismissing everything following T2, it’s learned the RoboCop franchise is going a similar route.

In an interview with ZeitGeist Magazine, the writer of the 1987 RoboCop movie, Edward Neumeier, reveals he is currently developing a RoboCop movie that is a sequel to the original.

“…It’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop, and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now; so maybe we’ll get another one out of it,” Neumeier said.

Two RoboCop movies followed the original, which weren’t as well received, and RoboCop was recently rebooted with the Joel Kinnaman 2014 movie that also received a lukewarm response, so Edward Neumeier says they are starting from where the original continues.

“Well, here’s what I’ll say. We’re not supposed to say too much,” Neumeier offered. “There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies, and there was recently a remake, and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”

RoboCop Peter Weller

The original RoboCop starred Peter Weller as officer Alex J. Murphy who gets shot while on patrol and is near death so he unwittingly becomes subjected to the RoboCop program where his mind is supposed to have been wiped as his body is transformed into a cyborg; however, the cyborg retains memories and emotions of Alex Murphy, and he becomes RoboCop.

It will be interesting to see what direction Edward Neumeier takes the new RoboCop sequel as Part 2 I thought was so-so, but Part 3 was simply awful. Hopefully they keep the flying RoboCop out of this one.
